About This Game

Beep's Escape is a non-too-subtle nod to the ZX Spectrum games of the 1980s, in particularly the Dizzy franchise of action-adventure games.

You take control of Beep, a brave yet cavalier robot who is on a mission to escape from the strange tech facility that he and his fellow bots are being held captive in. Using just your wits and the items you find around you, will you help Beep find a route to safety?

Features

  • Lots of old-school platforming, some of which will test your skills.
  • Puzzles galore. Use items in unusual ways to solve puzzles and progress!
  • Talk to your fellow worker bots for clues and help.
  • Watch out for a host of hazards, including the feared guard bots!
  • Built in CRT filter and authentic ZX Spectrum loading sequence, for real retro feels!

I really like it. It definitely captures the retro vibe of an 80s puzzle platformer. I love the way the art looks, and it has some cool special effects too. The save and load system is very handy because there are quite a few hazards about that you might curiously wander up to. I'm currently mapping it on paper because it's clearly got quite a few rooms and puzzles. Anyway, I recommend it!

As someone who was there, Beep's Escape is not merely retro. It is faithful to the spirit of an older era of games, and I am well impressed. All the puzzles are fair, but you have to pay attention! Don't misplace your items, I speak from experience. I was a little disappointed because there seems to be only one song, but I realized there doesn't need to be more. Other than some forgivable conversation tree quirks where, for example, a NPC seems to forget that a quest has been completed but it doesn't affect game progression otherwise, the game has very few bugs. Floor collision doesn't work quite right in maybe two places, and sometimes items don't display in the inventory at the bottom of the screen. Vertical scrolling might not be perfect? High polish otherwise! Beep's Escape is exactly what it claims: A straight-forward adventure-puzzler. It is not more, and I say it shouldn't be. That would ruin its charm. Captain Recommended.

From the ghost of memory rises a fond look back at the oft forgotten, early-age adventure-platformer genre that seeks, above all, to capture authenticity for systems such as the ZX Spectrum as close as it can. It chases the platform of yesteryear so eagerly, and succeeds in its goal so thoroughly, that it transcends descriptors of nostalgia and becomes instead a real relic of a bygone era of videogames. If someone had told me that this was some secret game that had been locked away for forty-odd years, I would have believed it. Following a disruptive explosion in a busy laboratory, the mischievous yet charming robot named Beep must attempt a daring escape from a cold, oppressive facility, or face destruction at the hands of his captors. As Beep, you must navigate the halls and holes of an oppressive, high-security facility, engaging in a series of soft, logic-based puzzles, in order to get past the guards and win your freedom. It's a charmingly minimalist premise that utilises the imp...

If you are a fan of classic adventure games and platformers, this game will hit all of your nostalgia buttons. It has a good sense of humor, a cute robot, and a well designed world to explore. I've enjoyed it quite a bit. Parts of it are a little clunky at times. I've run into a few bugs. The hit boxes on certain objects are a bit odd. But the developer is actively working on fixing issues, which goes a long way in my book, especially for a game that's already good. I will add: save often or play on casual mode while you're getting used to it. I'm REALLY bad at being patient, so I enjoyed the game a lot more when I wasn't worried about loading my save because of a dumb mistake.

Beep's Escape is an utterly charming and delightful retro indie title and I can't recommend it enough. For those of us who remember the Dizzy games on the ZX Spectrum, it's a loving homage to that genre and you'll be transported right back to the 1980s. For those who don't, it's a cheery style of 2D platformer in which you explore a map of exotic rooms and locations, navigating the odd danger and finding items which you can use in creative, cartoony puzzles to help further your progress. In this case, you play a cute little robot named Beep who is trying to escape the underground lab facility where he works after being framed for a dangerous accident. Things to love about Beep's Escape: * Adorable retro graphics that make a proud feature of their lo-res and limited colour palette * Slick little pixel animations * A bop of a chiptune soundtrack that remains enjoyable on loop * A simple and intuitive interface * Controls that feel easy and natural * A large map and some tricksy...

Does a tear form in your eye when you recall reading Crash magazine on the school bus, typing in a 500 line program from Let's Compute! in BASIC, or getting excited to see a tape-sized box under the Christmas tree, knowing that it's Captain Dynamo or Super Robin Hood? Well, this game is tailor-made for you! This is a lovingly created Dizzy/Seymour game with a handy save/load system and a developer who responds to bug reporting quickly and succinctly. Once patching and updating has been done, I would love a Beep in Space or a Beep in Dimension X. Or something.

Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of Beep's Escape! Completely faithful to similar games of the 80s era, with a few nostalgic nods to a certain popular character from that time. Brought a tear to my eye that did! I had a few moments of being stuck and not sure what to do next, but a little head scratching and progress was made. All the puzzles are well made and logical. Oh and that tune is such a head bobber! Amazing job all around. I look forwards to seeing more of Beep's adventures in the future! He can't leave his fellow workers trapped in that factory forever right? ;) Oh and Beep merch!! And a ZX Spectrum version? Oh my...
