About This Game

Ultra Mega Planet Battles is an intense arcade-style, space-based, twin-stick shooter. Players can play by themselves, or with up to 3 friends local co-op or via Steam's Remote Play (total of 4 players). Select your character, select and modify your ship, then get shooting!

  • 8 campaign missions across the solar system

  • Over 30 unique enemies and bosses

  • Up to 4 players local co-op or Steam Remote Play

  • 3 difficulty settings

  • Select from 4 different characters

  • Select from 4 different ships / mechs, with unique attributes

  • Upgrade your ship / mech during the campaign

  • 3 different play styles, including classic vertical shmup, horizontal shmup and arena

  • Choose from a modern look or classic 16-bit look in game

  • Killer synthwave soundtrack

Levels in UMPB vary by type, including classic vertical scrolling levels, room-to-room (arena) type levels and horizontal scrolling levels. The goals of each level also vary. Some have bosses that need defeating, some are time-based and others objective based (e.g. destroy power cores of an enemy base).

DIFFICULTY

UMPB has 3 difficulty settings to choose from as well as the game adjusting the difficulty automatically based on the numbers of players.

THE CHARACTERS

Select from 4 characters, each with their own style, back story and motivation for fighting the enemy.

THE SHIPS

Select from 4 ships (that also convert to Mechs for certain levels). Each ship has different attributes at the start of the game, and can be upgraded or downgraded throughout the game. There are 4 ship attributes, Attack, Defence, Revive and Speed. In addition to the 4 attributes, each ship is equipped with missiles, mines, speed boosts, shields and freeze rays (depending on the level).

THE LAB

The lab is where ships can be upgraded or downgraded. The in-game resource (or currency) “Krytanium” is used to manufacture upgraded parts for the ships. "Krytanium" is collected from fallen enemies or from downgrading attributes of your ship.

THE ENEMIES

Enemies range from rapid fighters that lock onto a specific player, to large slow-moving beasts that drop special weapons that will impact the player’s controls or speed. Employ different tactics depending on the enemy type. For example, some enemies are impervious to the basic player weapons and can only be damaged by player missiles and mines.

16-BIT MODE

Toggle between a modern look and a classic 16-bit look. Players can start the game this way, or change mid-game in the pause menu!

I picked up this game specifically to play co-op with my friends, and it really hit the spot. It brought back some great memories of playing Smash TV, Gunstar Heroes, and Alien Storm back in the day. I was pleasantly surprised by how diverse the levels were, there are three completely different types, which kept things fresh. My only real gripe is that it's a bit on the short side, but overall, it did the work for us.
