About the Game

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is a soulslike, action RPG set in the land of Shu during the dark and tumultuous late Ming Dynasty, plagued with warring factions and a mysterious illness spawning monstrous creatures.

Become Wuchang, a skilled pirate warrior struck by amnesia, who must navigate the uncertainties of her mysterious past while afflicted by the horrific Feathering disease. Explore the depths of Shu, enhancing your arsenal and mastering new skills harvested from fallen foes. Evolve your fighting style by sacrificing elusive Red Mercury and further develop new techniques obtained throughout your action-packed journey. Augment the weapons in your repertoire with powerful enchantments, allowing for a unique approach to combat and strategy that suits your personal style.

Battle against grotesque abominations, drawing on ancient lore to challenge the creeping darkness that threatens the humanity that remains. Your quest for truth will take you through forgotten temples, overgrown ruins, and shadowed paths fraught with peril. As you piece together Wuchang's lost memories, your choices will lead you to one of several endings—each determined by the choices made, secrets unearthed and the allies you choose to trust.

Immerse yourself in a rich storyline, dynamic combat system, and breathtaking visuals that offer an unforgettable adventure through lands veiled in chaos and death. Will you reveal the truths of Wuchang's curse and bring peace to Shu, or will you succumb to the encroaching horrors? The fate of the land rests in your hands.

Patch 1.5 added censorship and changed story bits that don't make any sense to comfort fragile Chinese nationalism. Edit after patch 1.5.1: the game has been nerfed even more, with many areas that contained multiple mobs now having just one. I don't know who this game is for, but it's clearly not able-bodied people.

Loved the game all the way until patch 1.5. Game definitely has it flaws but in the end very enjoyable. The story was good, combat was great(ish). Dev single-handedly butchered the whole theme of the story by changing plotlines and catering to the idiotic nationalist, who would never touch the game. Would not recommend until dev fix this or give global players a way to revert this themselves. *cough* localization=1 *cough*

First, improvement and optimization are always welcome. But the sudden change to the plot is such bullsh. - Turning off the ability to farm some human enemies just contradict the whole design of the game. Now you can really only get Madness with the Incense, which is ??? - And then, why making Yu Xia and the Emperor live? Wouldn't it basically just break the whole plot of the game? Going against the law of nature will turn those reborn into monstrosity abomination? So, if the Emperor could be revive without any consequences, why not Bai Kru? Why not Honglan? Why not Fang Ling? And most importantly, why not Bai Yu - the actual reason why this very game even started? Is the Emperor somewhat more "deserving" than the others? Give me a real reason. - Why keeping Zhao Yun alive? He's lingering around Shu for more than 1000 years using the Jade Feather Chisel. After defeating him we got the chisel, wouldn't that mean logically speaking, he should be put to rest? Both from story point and ...

A silent censorship patch was added a month after release. This is unacceptable. Stop ruining games to bend a knee to politics.

Patch 1.5 made the game a lot easier and reduced the level of violence, I wouldn't call this a souls-like anymore.
Though rough around the edges, this Wuxia RPG delivers a rewarding experience and recaptures the spirit of the original Dark Souls
My feelings for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are rather complicated. It’s a Souls-like that delivers some incredible highs, but also frustrating lows. Even after completing all the endings and achievements, I struggle to recommend it wholeheartedly. It’s punishing, but often for the wrong reasons, and filled with no shortage of niggling gameplay issues. To say this game tests your patience to the utmost limit is putting it lightly. Yet even with all these hiccups, I really enjoyed my time with Wuchang. I consider it as one of my favorite Souls-likes in recent memory, right up there with The First Berserker: Khazan. Chances are, if you're checking this out, you’re already into Souls-likes. The vibe is very Dark Souls meets Black Myth: Wukong, with bamboo forests, ancient Chinese architecture, and creepy super...

This one hurts to not recommend as the game itself is great. It's the most fun I've had with a souls-like since Bloodborne/Lies of P and I'd argue the level design is the best we've seen since Sekiro. It also ran great on my end too (which I know it hasn't for many so beware of that). However, the devs have caved to Chinese nationalists and censored the game heavily. No, they didn't censor what you're thinking they did. Instead, they censored the story in a way that affects the gameplay too. The story was a pretty interesting take on the Buddhist concept of reincarnation and samsara through a Chinese lens with some pretty gnarly horror concepts thrown in there too. I really enjoyed it and since it's a souls-like, these story concepts are explored through gameplay and boss fights. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned censorship, the story has been made contradictory and nonsensical. Apparently, Chinese nationalists have a huge issue with the content of the game because th...

This is NOT a Souls clone. I struggled a lot with the game at first because everyone online says it's just another copy of the Souls formula that doesn't innovate. This is profoundly incorrect. The people complaining about the game's difficulty are struggling because they can't see the game for what it is. They're trying to play it as something it is not. Firstly, it's more akin to Bloodborne with much faster rolls but with a perfect roll mechanic. The bosses do attack almost relentlessly so you might be tempted to play the game how you play Elden Ring. However unlike in ER (specifically the DLC) where they spam attacks just for the sake of making the fight a dodge slog followed by the occasional 2 frame attack window, in Wuchang you actually have tools to deal with spam. The clash system is perfect for dealing with relentless melee attacks. It allows you to take very reduced damage while dealing poise and hp damage to the boss or enemy. And you can't use clash mindlessly. It do...
Very much enjoyed the game, as a non-Souls player. With some patience and dedication (77 hr and completed NG, before the v1.5 nerf. Ready for NG+ now), I did get that satisfaction and "relaxation" I was looking for in weekday evenings after work or during weekends.
(First ever Steam review - please go easy on me)
TL:DR
Based on nearly 80 hours of play, I have to say this game simply deserves a much better rating that what it has now. Solid 9/10, at least for me. Even if you are just a casual non-Souls gamer, I highly recommend you keep an open mind and give this game a go. To me, the part I enjoy the very most was its map and shrine design. How everything is connected after you explore them. No, this is not a perfect game. But yes, it is an excellent game especially you go in with the right expectations and happy to embrace the challenge, and you will be rewarded eventually.
3 quick tips that greatly enhanced my own play - hope they help you if you are...

It’s like Dark Souls—if every enemy were faster than you, could poise through all your attacks, hit you with 17-hit combo strings that took you from full health to death, and knocked you down every other second, taking five business days to get back up. They seem to think that what makes a Souls game is frustrating gameplay.
