About This Game

Danger Cliff is a 2D Collectathon Platformer that harkens back to the golden age of internet browser games. You play as Clifford--an overwhelmingly positive young adventurer--followed by his best friend Boxer. One day while the duo was out exploring a set of mysterious sky ruins, Boxer's home starship was blown out of the sky! With no one more competent willing to help, Clifford and Boxer volunteer to explore several huge zones in search of the ship's missing parts before whoever shot it down can get their hands on them.

Gameplay: In classic Collectathon style, you start off in a hub world with access to only one level containing several collectables. The more collectables you get, the more new levels you unlock! Eventually, you'll unlock a super-tough boss course which, upon completion, will grant you access to the next set of levels!

Cone Rush: Clifford's signature move! When activated, he'll transform into a drill and fly in the direction held. This can be done once horizontally and once upward before needing to recharge by landing. Many of the game's challenges are too large to tackle with a standard jump, so mastery of the Cone Rush is critical! On top of that, there are additional moves such the Air Dash and Power Jump which are not required to beat the game, but allow skillful players to pull off some crazy tricks!

Content: The game contains 19 main courses, each with multiple objectives. There are also several extra levels, including dedicated final boss and secret final boss levels, 7 endless challenge rush stages, harder rematches against 6 major bosses, unlockable challenge modes, and more! With a high level of skill, players can beat the final boss after around 2.5 hours of gameplay, while completing the game by getting all 100 collectables will take around 5 hours (First time playthroughs will likely take much longer).

For some background, I initially found out about this game from the Developer posting about it in a Discord Server I'm in. After some initial ribbing (because of course) I got the demo and played it, from then on I was hooked... To summarise the game as simply as I can, it is a 2D Collectathon Platformer that, quoting the developer, "is meant to be a spiritual successor to Super Mario 63", and while it may not look like that from the outset, it wears it's inspirations on it's sleeve proudly. The general gameplay loop of going between a selection of levels in a Hub World, and searching for Primary Collectibles to achieve a grander goal very much takes it's roots from the Classic 3D Mario Formula. But the game makes it's own flavour with it, and it's a blast to play through. To get the elephant of the room adressed, I will acknowledge that the game may not look the most appealing (especially in the modern landscape of Raytraced Photo-Realistic Graphics and/or Super Styliz...

I like this game a lot for reasons many game critics probably won't, and that can be summarised to how far off the checkpoints are from one another (even bosses not having checkpoints), and the lacking mitigation of challenge, like gaining the invincibility leaf in super mario world 3d by dying repeatedly. Instead it apts for the service of encouraging players by rewarding players for utilising mechanics in levels that include air dodging through obstacles at the right time to gain a moment of I frames WITH additional dash attacks, and having the little triangles you collect not only (albeit slowly) recover your health but also (once you collect enough) give you an instant revival just when you think your down for the count. The aforementioned challenges steadily but surely amount to hectic ordeals with lots of platforming requiring you to be nimble but also be quick to get on again, (hopefully at the right time and platform), while taking count of the dashes and jumps you have.
