About This Game

RogueViz is a non-Euclidean geometry engine, originally designed for HyperRogue. While the setting of HyperRogue has proven to be extremely universal -- ascending from the original mind-bending 2D puzzle roguelike gameplay to experimental modes like 3D racing or first-person shooter -- some ideas still did not fit its world. Such games are included here!

The games in this collection are of various genres, but all of them are experiments on how non-Euclidean geometry can be used to create engaging gameplay. Note that we use "non-Euclidean" in the mathematical meaning of "curved space", which is more mind-bending than the mainstream meaning! The following games are included:

  • Bringris: A 3D falling block puzzle game. No keys to rotate the pieces horizontally because the space is non-Euclidean (and thus it is not needed); no keys to rotate the pieces vertically because the space is anisotropic (and thus it is not needed)!

  • Nil Rider; A racing game in Nil geometry. Have you seen these impossible staircases? In Nil Rider, you can ride them to gain more and more speed. Great both on the computer screen and in VR!

  • Relative Hell. Abandon all hope of going faster than light! This game lets you have some fun with de Sitter and anti-de Sitter geometries. The anti-de Sitter game is a multidirectional shooter, and the de Sitter game is a bullet hell.

  • Seuphorica: a solitaire deckbuilder where you create a crossword. Originally designed for the Euclidean square grid, but the RogueViz version lets you see what non-Euclidean crosswords would look like!

The three first games above are currently the only games specially designed for their respective geometries (H2xR, Nil, and (anti) de Sitter). The collection also includes smaller games and demos.

This isn't a game that's particularly all about the gameplay or a story, but I find it to be one of the most intriguing things I've ever seen. RougeViz's YT channel has some most mind-bending videos about non-euclidian geometry that always makes me dream about possible, insane ideas for games that haven't happen yet. Something that isn't spoken of enough definitely, playing some of these modes like racing in Thurston geometires gives you this unexplainable dread that I can only guess, is something that Lovecraft was trying to pass onto his readers when describing some of the eldrich horrors. Geometry that doesn't follow your everyday rules but forms everything around you feels so unnatural, so abnormal, alien - even a "demo" that is available here invokes a lot of emotions to me and plenty of time it's fear. Your surroundings moving too fast, in an unatural way, I find it so exciting. If you're curious about these things, give it a try! Though beware of very unique control bindings.

3D Tetris, Scrabble, bullet hell/shmup, riding across landscapes, and many puzzles, all with a non-Euclidean twist to them. If you really enjoy this developer's largest game, HyperRogue, especially messing around with the geometry settings there, you'll get addicted to this collection of games just as quickly.

I haven't checked out all the geometry stuff yet, but the scrabble-like deckbuilder Seuphorica is really good!

I like relative hell, it shouldn't be fun, and kinda hurts my brain, yet It's kind of addicting.
