About This Game

The king is dead. The country is wracked by rebellion. And an old comrade from your past has returned to claim the crown for himself.

I, the Forgotten One is a 450,000-word interactive novel by John Louis. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

You are the late king's eldest child and royal bastard. Disinherited and tossed aside, you were sent off as a child to fight in the distant frontier of the kingdom, to die forgotten and unknown.

You, however, survived, and have been shaped into an instrument of war.

With the realm now in turmoil, you have been called upon to once more bloody your blade.

You must restore peace, by any means necessary.

Even as you feel yourself slipping, deeper and deeper into a pit of despair.

  • Play as a man or woman
  • Immerse yourself in a world whose perceptions change based on your chosen physicality
  • Specialize in three separate aspects of medieval war
  • Choose from three different fighting styles which are further influenced by your physical attributes
  • Meet a wide cast of characters, from the mother that disowned you to your surrogate father
  • Fall down three separate mental paths
  • Sustain your relationship with your family, or let it collapse all together
  • Experience the brutal realities of war and its consequences on the mind

Above all, find purpose and hope, before you shatter for good.

I love this! This game takes into consideration whether you are tall, short or average height, and which equipment you have in one on one combat, for one. It also does a great job at portraying how medieval forces fought, tactics and strategy-wise and what logistics were involved, including the grim cost of simply marching troops during bad weather. Also, it actually treats it as surprising to the individual people when you, be it as a woman of average height or a small guy for example, take command of a troop of people. Because you are underestimated at first glance. Which you can, btw, play into and actively use to your advantage. You are very railroaded along the plot though. Within that, you get to play around, but it is very much a story with choices, rather than an adventure you shape. Which doesn't mean you don't get to influence not only how battles go, but also maybe who sits on which throne in the end.

I didn't know it was physically possible to misunderstand combat ptsd this bad and turn it into something this absolutely edgy. This writer clearly was doing some self insert and has some stuff going on and I'm quite annoyed they made me suffer through it too. I spent the whole entire game trying to figure out when and how I would possibly get the choice to have my character act remotely normal for two seconds but it never came, and everyone around me played tumblr support group instead of doing what would have happened in any reasonable setting and immediately removing the entirely unstable person from command or at the very lest not trusting a single thing I said. It also repeatedly has to shove the same ham fisted edgyness down your throat in the exact same ways over and over again. There's not too many choices that actually matter and it feels pretty linear in regards to the story, which may or may not be a huge con and I didn't care too much about honestly. What did irk me is it...
