I wish I could personally slap every person who's ever written a bad / middling review about this game. I've put off playing this game for so long because 1. I don't like non-action-oriented horror games too much, 2. this game had middling reviews both in the past and in recent times. But damn, this is a great game. I haven't been this captivated by a game's story in a long time. Even if you have some knowledge of the Cthulhu mythos, (it's impossible not to, with how prevalent it is in popular culture in general nowadays) you'll still be holding your breath and dying to know what happens next in the story at all points in the game. Some of the gameplay mechanics it has are innovative and very ahead of its time. The game OOZES with audiovisual atmosphere, despite having pretty mediocre graphics even for its time. You get immersed right from the start and stay immersed to the end. It does have its flaws, AI being the biggest one. Enemy AI is bad. And admittedly, the game gets into the...

To play this game on a modern PC you have to cap your FPS. Otherwise you will encounter crashes and bugs. Windows 10: If you encounter a blackscreen on launch, just ALT+TAB once or twice and the game should start. If you got a AMD card just use the AMD Radeon Software / Radeon Adrenalin Software and apply the specified settings over there. For Nvidia Users: Open your Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> "Program Settings" Tab: Click on the Add button and locate the game executable: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Cthulhu\Engine\CoCMainWin32.exe Now adjust the Profile: Max Frame Rate - I set mine to 60 and it works fine for now. Since the game is uncapped this is already a big step but i guess capping it at 30 would be more save, but i dont care. You can also force additional graphic settings onto the executable like: - 16x Anisotropic filtering instead of the x8 in the launcher. - FXAA - 8x Antialiasing - Vsync if you encounter screen tearing when l...
Rough around the edges, but the story and setting draws you in from beginning to end. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3514859033
One of my favorite games of all time. The state of it is a shame, but install fan patches and I promise this game will live in your mind rent free till your end. If they took the biggining section, if you've played you know what I mean, and made it a standalone horror game it would sell like mad.
The first half was okay, with some good atmosphere and tense moments. But later it just turns into a mediocre FPS with dumb AIs and clunky shooting. The worst part is the constant whispering voices. They are supposed to be scary, but they are just annoying. On top of that, the game keeps randomly shaking, blurring, and throwing in weird effects that feel more irritating than scary.
Save your sanity and don't bother. Complete and under mess that is actually not beatable without modding or cheating and even then its just not worth all the effort because all the patch links are very outdated and don't work anymore, tried 4 different patches and neither of them did anything in the slightest.. 10 percent of the game is good and the other 90 percent is just complete torture and death by numerous bugs, glitches and the game running like utter crap. The boat portion is complete broken and your suppose to hit invisible enemies that you have no way of knowing whether or not you hit any of them, odd design choice. Then finally the last escape sequence is actual impossible to do no matter how well you manage the corners and do just enough jumping. Failed it 10 times and just gave up. No clue why they designed it like that and didn't just add a little bit more time so you didn't have to mod the game to complete it, another very odd choice for the developers to do. Probably wo...
Game is really nice one. There are bugs and glitches, nothing that 5 minutes on google wont solve. First episodes are masterpiece, then is losses a bit of momentum. Overall, i think this is the peak of what a horror game can give. I did a speedrun with cheats on linux (yes, linux): https://youtu.be/bni7kJcQwsw?si=8x35AYO6BfqvkW1w
I remember hearing that this game was a classic. Shame it barely functions properly
