About This Game

Cobalt Core is a sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder with a unique single-axis combat system that will throw you for a loop. Many loops!

Give orders to your crew by playing cards: Will you raise shields to protect your ship, dodge incoming missiles and cannon fire to avoid damage outright, or strike preemptively to disable your enemy’s weapons? Outmaneuver your foes to stay just ahead of impending calamity, and reach the Cobalt Core!

  • Fresh new spin on tactics – dodge attacks and target weak points in this unique single-axis take on tactics combat. Outwit the enemy in a high stakes game of cat and mouse!
  • Customize your deck – hundreds of cards and split upgrade paths means no two runs will be the same. Find that perfect combo that brings your deck from powerful to overpowered.
  • Get to know your crew – each character comes with a completely unique playstyle and their own personal story. Bring 3 along, mix and match their decks, and see how these little goobers get along with each other.
  • Tons of replayability – hundreds of different character+ship combinations before you even hit “start run”. Crank up the difficulty and really test your skills!
  • Daily Challenges – Keep runs fresh with all sorts of modifiers. Can you win with just 1 character, or with your ship scrambling itself every fight? Play at your own pace, or get competitive on the leaderboards!
  • Get in the groove – featuring 90+ minutes of catchy and electrifying original music by Minecraft composer Aaron Cherof!
  • Forward momentum – untangle a narrative and unlock more playstyles as you go. Is there any escape from this time loop?

As someone who has fully completed the game, I've a lot to say, but I'll keep it brief. For what could've been a dull, monotonous deckbuilder, Cobalt Core proves time and again that this genre can be fresh, inspired, and revolutionizing. None of its achievements felt unfair, its challenges too daunting, and its story both titillating and someone tear jerking. It was an amazing experience through and through, even if my misplays made me tear my hair out every once in awhile. The daily achievement was a little time consuming, but ultimately made for fresh experiences and gameplays I'd never even think to try. All in all, this game has my whole recommendation and I am grateful to have been introduced to this game by another, hopefully getting ever more looking and playing this masterpiece. It is my esteemed honor to review this game and come back to it most likely again and again.

I'm not happy about giving this game a thumbs-down. It's a decently innovative take on the genre with great music and atmosphere. But wow, is it small. Okay, it conforms to the near-mandatory three acts, 3 energy, five card draw and all those Slay the Spire establishments, I can forgive that. But the pool of enemies, events, cards, and artifacts is ludicrously small. Small to where damn near every game, you'll see the same "rare" cards, over and over. Enemies are worse! You fight the same ones every time, same elites in every sector, ad nauseam. To me, this truly defeats the purpose of a randomness-based game, so regrettably I must decline to recommend, but with the caveat that it took me about 15 hours of game time to start feeling like every run was identical. Worth the price? Not for me, but your mileage may vary.

Mind-numbingly boring. I fell asleep while playing. Your choices are limited to: move, block, shoot. It might be fine for kids. Refunded.

Its a good game in theory, but wow, is it extremely overpriced. I would think 10 euros is fair, or 8 if youre harsh, or 12 if youre kind about it. -There just isnt any variety. After 7 runs or so you will have seen everything this game has to offer but some flavour dialouge (that most of the time isnt even written good). Every run you will see the exact same enemies. The same with relics, you will have seen every relic in 3 runs total. You will get some specific relics in every run because how little there are. Despite the many characters and ships your strategy will consist of movement 90% of the time, any other strategy is too risky to try, MAYBE except some shields and corrosion if you get lucky with rare drops, or a singular big damage attack. But every time I wanted to go with those I got unlucky with drops, so I had to do the save movement strategy yet again. Not going with the Movement character in your team just feels like a coinflip. -Is there even progression aside f...

I really, really like this game. It's my favorite deckbuilder game I've played so far! It has nice aesthetics, a wonderful soundtrack, and I love the core gameplay a LOT. I think the process of choosing captains and discovering their decks and how they work together is really fun. I just love it. I've been playing it a lot. I do wish that there were more... things in this game, I suppose? I wish there were more enemy types, or an extra area that unlocks after beating the finale or something. I just love the idea of being able to keep going with a deck and see how far I can go, something like that! Regardless, I do absolutely LOVE what is here already and have found it to be very replayable and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it! The dragons in this game get a 7/10. Drake is a playable dragon and she's cool for that but she's also a bit of a dick. She's fun, though. There are also several reptillian enemies and NPCs that are very awesome, too!

I think my play time in this speaks for itself. If you want a roguelike with quirky humor and turn based tactics this is a great option.

undeniably a labor of love. everything is dripping with real care and effort: the dialogue, the flavor, the enemy design, the deck archetypes, the story.
