About This Game

STORY

In The Complex: Expedition, you are sent into The Complex along with your team to explore the unexplored regions. When that mission goes horribly wrong, you are left alone, dazed and lost, wandering the seemingly infinite maze of hallways of The Complex.

THE EXPERIENCE

This is a psychological horror experience based on the "Backrooms" urban legend. View the world through a VHS camera and follow along a storyline involving an expedition into The Complex.

With different endings and shifting entry points into The Complex, every playthrough can seem different. This is a slow-burning, atmospheric horror experience focused on exploration and tension.

 • Experience one of the most immersive Backrooms experiences to date.

 • Explore the mysterious and unforgiving world of The Complex.

 • Investigate an unknown lifeform residing in this world.

NOTE: This game is not connected with Kane Pixels' Backrooms nor the Backrooms Wiki/Fandom, though some parts of the experience may be inspired by them.

I am in two minds about this game on one hand I love it but on the other I don't. When The Complex Expedition first came out in Early Access it was a very different game, from what is now and personally I feel like that version of the game, was actually better than the full release version we have now. There is a lot of reasons why and to be honest I don't even know where to begin, you would really had to off played it back then to know what I am talking about. As it stands the game takes place in 1988 you play as an investigator who is part of this research team, known as Magwave and tasked with understanding an unknown location know as the complex. When you explore the complex you start to notice the game has a similar appearance, to how people describe the famous reddit creepypasta, called The Backrooms and throughout the game, you basically explore this area and try to find an exit. Gameplay wise I do like it its very solo, its like you just sort wonder about on your own most of...

First of all, let me say: the game isn’t bad – in fact, it’s probably the most faithful Backrooms game out there. It features recognizable locations, authentic Backrooms-style sound effects, and for a game of this type, it even has a surprisingly solid lore. For players who enjoy this specific kind of slow-burn psychological horror, this might actually be the best Backrooms experience currently available. But here comes my “but.” This game doesn’t do much more than the original demo – in fact, some segments from the demo were actually removed, which makes the overall experience feel a bit underwhelming. I still vividly remember the puppet rolling balls across the room – moments like that added a sense of eerie interaction that’s now completely gone. Honestly, the demo felt more suffocating and tense at times, and I can’t quite put my finger on why that is – but the full game didn’t manage to recapture that exact atmosphere. Another issue is the marketing: th...

Without a doubt, this is THE best backrooms game.
No jumpscares. No being chased. No loud sudden sounds. Just you and places you shouldn't be.
The early access version was better. Dev should have just made a new game or added to the old version if he wanted try out some fresh, freaky spooks. The early access version is GONE now; the full release scrapped most of that content, and feels almost like it started over, With this full release you get a LITTLE more variety but overall, it feels more linear despite this version having branching paths. The game still plays on your fear of the unknown, and building suspense, but instead of an immersive exploration it feels more like an immersive ride on rails. The mall is there but it is not the same and overstays it's welcome in my opinion, The old pools section was one of my favorite versions of the pool rooms, but now it is missing a lot of what made the old pools stand out and is way shorter. All that being said, still probably my favorite backrooms game, but not a recommendation at $15, which is sad because I definitely recommended this to friends when it was in early access, a...

The most true rendition of Cane PIxels BACKROOMS projects. This game has no business looking this real. absolute perfection as far as Backrooms horror goes. The most liminal of any of this genera. walking endlessly through the familiar, yet haunting areas, the lack of reason, or meaning to the chaos that is the complex, makes you feel so small, and like something could be there around any corner. the entire liminal space style really hits home and brings up some crazy feelings, being a 90s kid. There is such a strange comfort in the obvious terrifying environment, in just the ordinary and mundane. I swear the backrooms legit calls to me, and I know im not alone in these wild feelings these kind of areas give. feels like somehow you went back to the time you belong, but there is no one left there. truly haunting in the best ways. 10/10

Probably the worst Backrooms Game I've ever played. Was hyped because of reviews, but there was no atmosphere, no horror elements, no jumpscares, no chases. Nothing that I would usually associate with the Backrooms besides endless walking. And I dont wanna pay 15€ for simply walking around a laggy hallway.

This game is one of the best backrooms games I've ever played in a while, no cheap jumpscares, the atmosphere and how the game is built in general and it scares you with just that.

If you are into the Backrooms and liminal space games, The Complex is easily one of the better entries. Certainly worth picking up and experiencing. The visuals are insanely good, and both the audio cues and the ambient noise really lean into the unsettling feeling that nags at you the whole way through! The labyrinthine design of the Complex is very well crafted, though, it DOES slowly start to funnel to singular paths as you get closer and closer towards the finish, unfortunately. Though, that's the unavoidable trade-off for narrative design. That said, it makes for an increasingly tense experience! If you aren't as familiar with the Backrooms-type games, a recommendation would be to either wait for a sale or even try one of the free Backrooms games on Steam to get a feel for what you are getting into. The Complex, like most Backrooms media, isn't something more intense like Slender, with an entity constantly on your heels. Instead, it's more focused towards the eerie feeling of be...

I'm torn on giving this a good or bad review so ill just give it a mixed one.. prob leaning towards negative. There are sections like the mall that are designed to make you backtrack to probably get you out of the refund timezone. In short no cheap horror, its surreal horror and probably is the most accurate and authentic backrooms experience you can have. one ending is objectively more interesting than the the other to the point they should prob just remove the "right" ending. You get the illusion of exploration matter but the game is quite linear to the point you don't need to worry about blasting through cause you wont miss anything insane. The youtube vod they link after beating the game should prob just be integrated in to the game itself. In reality, its not worth the $15 i paid for it. If it goes on sale, its worth a buy.
