I have several issues with the fundamental design of this game, despite being an ardent lover of the genre. First off, it's one of those games where you don't actually _use_ anything you produce; there's no "point" in anything you make except that the game gives you explicit but arbitrary goals of "make 400 of this, make 800 of that". If you, like me, don't like that kind of design then you will hate Shapez 2. In, say, Factorio you're actually making the products needed to build out, upgrade your factory, improve your character, do research, etc. But in Shapez 2 you just "unlock" all the stuff you need to build automatically; likewise all the "research" is just unlocked linearly. Everything you make is just sent into the void, literally. The only reason you make stuff is so you can watch a counter tick up until you unlock the next in a long series of arbitrary, random "milestones." There's zero emergence in this game. There's none of the "now I'll focus on A, oh wait first I should ...

About the Game

shapez 2 is a top-down factory-building game where you extract and process geometric shapes. Each shape is its own set of building-blocks that your factories can take apart, stack, paint and put back together in unique ways. Build and automate to produce distinct shapes and solve the production challenge of each goal.

Automate the processing of abstract geometric shapes into more complex ones by cutting, rotating, stacking, painting and more. Deliver distinct shapes to unlock new technologies and expand your factory’s capabilities. Learn, improve, rebuild and solve logistical challenges to design the most efficient shape production lines.

Build in multiple interconnected layers, allowing you to compact and optimize your factories in a whole new dimension. Improve your designs to get the most benefit out of every space platform built and massively increase your production throughput.

shapez 2 is the purest factory building game imaginable - all buildings are free, resources never run out and there are no enemies or time limits. Prepare for a 100% factory-building experience: effortlessly delete, redesign and rebuild as much as you want, with no penalties, at your own pace.

You’re always in complete control - whether the messy spaghetti belts you built 4 hours ago could use some improvements or a whole circle factory needs to go, shapez 2 gives you the tools to do it without limitations.

Start your operation from a single asteroid and continuously expand by building new platforms. Unlock new layouts as you progress, and grow from a single belt into a massive multi-station space factory connected by space trains. Design modular blueprintable platforms to build on a massive scale, placing hundreds of buildings with just one click.

Performance is very important to us, and with the complete rewrite of shapez 2 in a new engine, we're doing our best to make sure that massive factories run smoothly - even with the all-new 3D visuals!

Abstraction is both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of this game. Instead of the tree structures typical of automation games, the products you manufacture are nodes in a cyclical graph, which makes it highly likely that your factory will be unique. This game is a must-play for people who play automation games for the puzzle. Then again, as someone put it, "Congratulations, you've made a rhombus factory!"
This game isn't colourblind friendly. I have been trying to complete one of the challenges for 2 hours only to realise that I was using a yellow shape instead of a green shape. I only noticed when comparing the shape letter codes. I played around with the colourblind settings, however, they are still no benefit to me... I am severely colourblind and find it quite annoying that this is a reason for not being able to play this game. Please allow an option so that I can select my own colours within the settings... so that I can find different colours that I am able to distinguish.
Promoted as a pure factory/automation game, but doesn't scratch the itch that other automation games do for me in any way. The biggest problem is that the constantly changing requirements and goals mean I'm constantly tearing down and replacing old factories, so I'm always worrying about things at the micro-scale without any ability to build repeatable things at macro-scale (e.g. multi-purpose subcomponents that I can build factory blocks for and expand production to get a head start on new milestones). Maybe this will change in 1.0 with "factory mode" and I'm willing to revisit the game once that update is released.
If you like factory games, this is a no brainer. The details on the factory are amazing, love to zoom in and watch things work as much as zooming out to see a larger view. The game seems simple at first, but the shapes you need to build get progressively more complex, and if you want you can build very complex logic for endgame to automate production. It's a lot deeper than at first glance. Highly recomend.
My favourite factory game. I adore factorio, but this is what I play to relax.
Fun concept, never played shapes1, seems cool. My only issue is i think the design of some of the factories are kind of bad. More specifically, I like the challenge of getting the right throughput, logistics and whatnot, but fighting against the quirky nature of for example the painter, is kind of dumb, why should my design have to be 2 times larger just because someone thought it would be a fun challenge to put the inputs / outputs / paint ports in such a way that it just generally inconveniences me. It's not challenging, or hard. It's just annoying, the challenge should be the goal + space limitations + throughput / wormhole limits, not quirky shaped factories. My only other annoyance is the amount of time wasted in this game. I.e. 1k left of x needs to go in. While i could spend 20 minutes bridging some other random piece from miles away over, have to make a new novel solution for it to normalize it and increase throughput, the original line would have finished in that time anyw...
devs casually sitting on a bug for months where you can't see what shape will be produced at the end of your production line is so aggravating it's not worth playing
if you have a laptop and not a gaming setup, zooming out too fast causes the game to crash
Ive played (and mostly watched on YT) a lot of shapez 1. I haven't gotten a chance to play a lot of shapez two. But from what i've built so far this is such an improvement over the first. Perfect game for those of you that are automation buffs like I am (or just autistic lol) hundreds of hours of satisfying fun!
