About This Game

--GAME OVERVIEW--

Rhythm Storm is a roguelike bullet heaven/horde survivor with heavy rhythmic elements. Your vehicle automatically aims and fires (player-controlled twin-stick firing is possible at any time) while you control movement and a special power. You select a vehicle, set it's initial configuration and powers, then proceed into the action.  Nearly everything in the world (except you) moves to the beat, and your goal is to survive to the end of each song.  There are 3 main worlds, a boss, and a bonus world, each with its own unique song and mix of enemies.

--VECTOR GRAPHICS, NO TEXTURES--

Rhythm Storm uses untextured lines and polygons in rendering the game world and UI (along with a few fullscreen effects). The game visuals are crisp and clear, and the more resolution you give it the better it looks. For the best experience, it is recommended that you play the game on a 1440p (or higher) monitor with a refresh rate of 120hz or higher. [Playing the game at 1080p/60hz is still enjoyable, just less than ideal.]

--RHYTHMIC GAMEPLAY--

Rhythm Storm is a musical experience, but it's not a traditional rhythm game. Nothing your vehicle does is synced to the music, but much of the world IS synced. Wave changes happen every 8 bars of music, powerups and the world pulse to the beat, the UI is jamming to the beat, and many of the enemies move to the beat.  Enemy spawning is also synced.  Though the game is heavily synced to the music, no musical talent or beat-synced button pressing is required to succeed at the game.

--REFINED BULLET HEAVEN FORMULA--

At its core, Rhythm Storm is similar to other Bullet Heaven/Swarm Survivor/Horde Survivor games in structure.  At the start of the game, you configure your vehicle's default upgrades, which includes the starting weapon(s).  You also select which 4 categories of upgrade types you want to see (these are called Upgrade Sets).

During gameplay, you destroy enemies and collect XP as usual.  When you collect enough XP to upgrade, you'll choose between 2 sets of upgrades.  Each set has 3 upgrades, two of which are from the upgrade set category, while the third upgrade is more random.  It's simpler and more intuitive than it sounds, and keeps the pace of play going while still allowing for a variety of builds and dynamic choices.  More choices are also available once you unlock the re-roll modifier (semi-permament meta-progression upgrades).

I dunno. I might revisit this down the road, but I played it for a little while and just... it wasn't fun? I like bullet heavens, and I like over the top particle effects, but the game part just felt like a more random, complex Vamp Survivors with less payoff. Super stat-checky (which, to be fair, most bullet heavens are) but with absolutely no feedback about what anything does or why you are losing. The meta upgrades are insanely expensive, as well - at a guess, hundreds if not 1,000+ hours to unlock them and who knows if the game is balanced around them. So yea it just feels kinda rough right now, maybe in some months and some patches I can give it another go.

Pretty interesting loop until it isn't. Sadly it gets stale pretty fast, and the meta increasing its cost after every purchase is a decision I'll never understand, maybe if it increased by 10% of it's price it would feel okay, but currently you can get an upgrade and suddenly everything costs 1000 more, this gets worse when you know that a succesful run would net you 1k~, so if every upgrades is now 3k, that is 3 really good runs just to get one upgrade, then everything will go from 3k to maybe 4.5k, so grind, grind and more grind. If the game at least had good replayability it would be cool, but after a while you will get tired of seeing the same enemies (enemies just move or shoot), there isn't like any special enemy type that does anything more interesting than shooting more bullets or moving around you instead of in a line, so although there is a ton of build variety, enemies don't offer enough challenge to try those busted builds (take for example Nova Drift, where build possibi...

Honestly the most fun I have had in a while. Simple but very deep. build variation and driving beat make this a pick up and play bite sized game that is well worth the investment .

Geometry Wars + Vampire Survivors seems like an awesome idea for sure, but it's not just a good idea - the quality of the execution here is outstanding. This game is extremely polished, the weapons and upgrade trees are fun, the core mechanics are nailed, and the music is great. If you have a Steam Deck not only does the game run perfectly but it takes full advantage of the OLED and makes great, immersive use of the haptics. A must buy.

I rarely leave reviews, but I had to given this game is a love letter to Geometry Wars and the combat expands on that game in every way I've always wanted a game to. I have looked for a game like this for twenty years and this is the first that comes close to a successor to Geometry wars. That being said I do have some big gripes which would make this game go from a "fun few hours" to "never putting it down ever again". + Excellent build diversity + Game feel is brilliant, explosions, vibrations, sound effects are all very well done - this is clearly a developer with a talent for making games fun + Superb soundtrack (though there needs to be more variety) + Loads of ships with different stats/abilities + Lots of unlockables - Extremely short - nowhere never enough Worlds (4-5 levels essentially) and I've cleared them on the hardest difficulty in under 3 hours. I was expecting a run to have something more like 10-15 levels with multiple bosses. - Not enough modes - Needs endless mode...

Very quickly did I fell in love with this game. A well-executed hybrid of Geometry Wars and Vampire Survivors is always welcome in my library. The dev also cared for the optimisation and it works pretty well on my PC with Geforce GTX 1080 - a smooth gameplay with so much particles and other effects while having very high settings on. And I thought I would never see a worthy competitor for Geometry Wars or Waves 1/2 in terms of vector graphics eye candy! The gameplay also stands out nicely. As per survivor genre tradition, you have a wide variety of upgrades during the run. However if you insist, you can customize the vehicle to make it operate like a traditional twin-stick, instead of automated bullet heaven. I definitelly recommend it. Its full price is totally worth it.
