As others have said, its a mix of anno and dungeon keeper without the depth of either. I mastered all of the mechanics in the first 30 minutes and then spent the remaining hour just watching resource counters tick up until I could grind my way to the end of the story. The implementation of the other 8 or so maps is lazy - They're literally identical in gameplay down too the identical story cutscenes (should you choose to enable them) with minor differences in the layout of rocks and trees on the surface and gold tiles / chasms in the underground. If you play without the story, which you will after sitting through the same thing for the third time, completing the rocket simply boots you out to the main menu screen which feels very anticlimactic. There is some attempt at replay value by each map giving you unique landmark buildings that, for example, make the train come faster or make your extractors work better - but honestly, after the third play through you'll have all the mechanic...

As an avid fan of the SteamWorld universe, I'll try anything and everything they put out, but I have to be honest and say this one should be a very easy skip. Most of the charm of the SteamWorld games is absent here as the genre and perspective just don't allow for the character building the series is know for. The production chains in this game are very long and the city-building above ground washes out very quickly so you'll have a difficult time discerning anything unless you're looking at your expense spreadsheet. Once you determine what you need, you'll struggle to find a place to put it, because again everything is washed out, but almost all of the buildings need to be within a certain proximity of other buildings. Things don't get much better underground, where near constant assaults and units that can't be directly influenced will leave you struggling to understand why these two very different sets of game mechanics were cobbled together. To be fair, I was playing with...
A great little city builder with a nice twist, where you both build the city and use the mine underground for resources.
The game is not bad. Far from it. Everything works as intended, which is a stable city builder game. However, it's too boring of a game. No bad thing will ever happen unless directly caused by the player. Nothing will happen to your town or the mines unless you plop something that diminishes stats or dig too much and doesn't care. You can leave the game idling and make dinner and literally nothing would happen, only positives as you restore your resources. I myself really like the surprise the simulator genre brings and the chaotic nature of solving situations that you hadn't accounted for, goes against your plan, or simply catches you off guard and you have to scramble. Plus, lacking some features like a data map makes it very tedious to click around and check the stats of each building. Unless it's just hidden away in a menu. I did the tutorial and it was not mentioned or shown, so I'm assuming it's not there. If I have to look up online to see if it has a basic feature, then that's ...

Good game
SteamWorld Build is a fascinating and ambitious entry in the SteamWorld franchise, one that pivots sharply from the side-scrolling, action-oriented games the series is known for into the realm of city-building and resource management. Developed by The Station and published by Thunderful, this title fuses the charm and steampunk aesthetic of the SteamWorld universe with gameplay mechanics reminiscent of classics like SimCity or Anno, while introducing a unique dual-layer system that adds a fresh twist to the genre. With its combination of surface-level city development and underground resource excavation, SteamWorld Build manages to deliver a strategic experience that’s both accessible and engaging, though not without a few rough edges. At its core, the game revolves around constructing a thriving settlement for steambots in a dusty, remote frontier town. You begin by placing basic structures—worker residences, service buildings, roads—and gradually expand into more advanced tier...
Terrible. Extremely sad to see SteamWorld go down in flames like this. The world building was getting good, but it seems once it changed hands to the new devs they had no idea what they were doing and just put out garbage for the masses. Game layout is bad, game design is bad, tutorial way too much hand holding. Like an AI did all the work based on what was expected, but had never played a game before and what was actually needed, just a bunch of check boxes to check off to feel like it did a good job.
I really love the Steamworld universe! Those little robots tickle my feathers whilst always giving me a challenge. After beating the main campaign and one other map I can safely give the following analysis: Easy going game that doesn't push you too hard at all. Money is pretty easy to get so you never have to worry. Resources are all found in the mine and so you'll definitely want to scour every inch of the place. The fights are fairly easy to defeat once your defenses are setup. I really like the fact that there's a lot of different buildings but it will tell you what you're missing if you don't build up to it properly. For example: You need to build glass bottles and have cactus fruits to make the moonshine. Clear of what you need to build on the building itself and how well the production is going. Just click on your warehouse if you don't know how well your production is keeping up and fix the red numbers. TLDR: Easy to figure out anything ...
The bot AI is so broken it actually breaks the game entirely (Guards, equipped with flamethrowers, stand in groups next to enemies/creep and mill about, letting them destroy your entire mine). Conveyors constantly fail to connect to resource extractors, and when you junction them, they break both belts. The manufacturing chains are very long and arbitrarily limited to small geographic locations, so balancing citizen needs is a constant thorn in your side. You must micro-manage grid locations instead of macro-managing the economy. This is a game about soulless, joyless, grinding work and also there are robots.
