Thief is the kind of game I hope to find when I'm combing through games as old or older than I am. It's definitely old, both in terms of the look and mechanical feel of it, but it doesn't take much playing for the idiosyncrasies of the game to start fitting like a glove. The game is stealth oriented, as my be inferred by its title, and at that it does an excellent job. Growing up, I understood Metal Gear Solid to be the stealth game option, but the problem with that is that MGS never felt like it wanted to commit to stealth. Thief, on the other hand, is all in on the concept. Hiding from enemies requires both hiding yourself visually from enemies by way of physical obstructions and shadow, and masking your sounds by maintaining your distance, moving slowly, and preferentially walking on the running rugs in the hallways rather than that super echo-y tile. The levels are designed in super fun and subtle ways so as to be believable environments while still providing intentional options fo...

we need remastered version of this great game
As someone who was born a little under a decade after this game came out, I believe it still holds up. The combat is clunky but that just encourages stealth. Most missions have a wide open map that allow for exploration and creative problem solving. The game is much better at stealth than a lot of modern open world sandboxes. The light crystal removes guesswork when it comes to visibility and enemies are expressive with vocal barks if they spot you. The game really makes you feel like you are not supposed to be somewhere. For the bad, many levels are frustrating if you do not bring the right tools and the graphics are quite dated. Overall great game.
Do I see why this game is classic and one of the fathers of the stealth and immersive sim genre's for a reason? Yes! Do I think that most newcomers to the series should start with Thief 2? Also, yes. As someone coming from thief 2, it feels that while most of the mechanics are there, the levels are more constrained and maze-like at the same time with significantly less useful maps, the story is more disjointed compared to the slow escalation of Thief 2, and the game tries to force you into combat way more often compared to Thief 2. There are still some great missions like Assassins, the Sword, undercover, and the the one in opera house, but more often than not, it doesn't feel like what you would expect a game called Thief to be like. It's still worth playing for the good parts, but keep this in mind: when you get to the Thieves Guild look up the level skip code, and use it. You'll thank me later.
They don't make 'em like they used to
The worldbuilding is very interesting, and I was hooked from the start. However, as time went on, the lore became a bit too overwhelming, and some missions started to feel tedious. I eventually had to rely on a walkthrough, as things began to get confusing. Garrett is a riot! I loved the voice actor and how dry he was. I had a lot of chuckles with him. The ending cliffhanger was perfect for him. I love characters who get dragged into stuff they desperately try to avoid. The gameplay is very tanky, but given that I knew how old this game is, I never had too many problems with it. I just didn't get to utilize all of the tools given to me. Sneaking is the main point here, obviously. Overall, this was a pure '90s experience - edgy, tanky, and absolutely fun.
One of the greatest if not the greatest stealth games of all time. The forefather of this genre. A must play for any gamer, but an absolute must for those who love stealthy games.
Download TFix and you are good. The atmosphere fits so well with how dark the game is
7/10. Quite good stealth game. Story is decent and the atmospheres and design fits perfectly well with its dark fantasy theme. Gameplay mechanics are pretty neat too. Shadows actually hides your presence and floor types affect the noise of your footsteps. You also have plenty of arrow types that would help you navigate and sneak past undetected, from moss arrows that mask loud tiles and rope arrows to climb or descent for alternate routes, and there are more of other types of arrows and items that widens the overall playstyle of becoming a master thief. The only bad items are mines. Not only they're loud and lethal, they barely even work most of the time because its trigger radius and fuse time are absolutely diabolical. AI were quite janky but its an old game neither any games from its era have any good AIs especially when it comes to stealth. 3 reasons why its 7 instead of 10 - The level Escape! is easily the worst level in the game that utterly destroyed my mood and enjoyment out...
Also one of the top 50 games you had to play. But this one needs fixing on steam. So don't forget about TFix. Thank you Mandalord to make it accessible. Nice stealth games are rare these games...
