Beyond the Mountains is a lovely top-down adventure game reminiscent of the GameBoy Color classic, Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. Although it isn't a very long game to go from start to finish with only 4 dungeons, it's a charming experience that the developer, VerdLife Games (Eric) clearly cares about and has put a lot of passion and love into. The world, art, story, and even the game engine itself was hand-crafted by him (and I assume a couple friends, based on the credits) to create a fun and unique experience that's both familiar to Zelda fans, but with some fun twists too. When I first purchased the game it had a couple rough edges, like most indie games do. Play testing is hard, and--as any software developer knows--users will do things in ways you couldn't even begin to imagine, breaking everything and encountering strange and weird quirks.
