About This Game

Avernum is an epic fantasy role-playing adventurer set in an enormous, subterranean nation. Avernum is a land underground, a subterranean nation full of rogues, misfits, and brigands, struggling for survival and wealth in the monster-infested darkness.

You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.

The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, misbehaves or doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.

But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you. Join your new countrymen, explore a huge game world, hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts, choose from hundreds of quests, and become the hero of the underworld!

I originally played this as a kid in the 90's when it was Exile, Escape from the Pit. I got it in a box called the "Mac cube" from Costco that had a ton of games, and played it for a million hours before even unlocking the other half. It was probably my favorite and most played game for years. I played it much differently, though. I mostly just ran around exploring and killing stuff. It was much different too, and in many ways harder with needing to eat, resurrect your party members in town, heal curses, do your own alchemy etc. I do have nostalgia for all of that, but this more streamlined version with a lot of quality of life improvements is more tolerable to me now in my dotage, and I'm actually going to beat it, like 25 years after first playing it. I do just love this game and have for a long time. There's just something I really like about running around a giant world that's full of secret areas, getting my butt kicked, getting strong and coming back and being the one wh...

I have played this game multiple times since I was young over the past 20ish years. Still is a great adventure game with puzzle, hard combats and fun exploring.

Immensly enjoyable to a certain type of gamer. Avernum is a very bare bones, old school RPG. It's a 2012 remake of a 2001 remake of a 1995 shareware game, and the graphics show it. But, there's something special here. I can't remember the last time I played an RPG with this little direction, and the lack of direction is, maybe, the most engaging part of this game. I'm 20 hours in, and, while I understand there are 3 big quests you need to complete to finish the game, I don't even know where those start. The dungeons, while pretty basic, are a joy to complete. Combat is a basic turn-based affair, but enjoyable in its simplicity. Maybe my only major complaint with the game is that the journal doesn't tell you when a quest you're doing has been completed before you turn it in, which leads to some backtracking, and revisiting areas you've already finished.

Enjoying it so far, the combat is engaging and encourages making a team with a wide set of skills (though i have a feeling a party of 4 warriors with str and end dumpstats won't have much trouble bending the game over) on a scale of 10 i'd rank this game as 3.5, not because it's not fun, if we just put that into consideration then i'd give it a solid 7. but the game didn't let me reciprocate the advances of the cute spider looking for a mate so I cut it's score in half. try it if you want, I feel like i got my money's worth from it do far.
