You're better off playing vanilla Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil, which come bundled with this now. Aside from bonus content like The Lost Mission, Doom 3: BFG Edition does away with too much of what made the original Doom 3 and ROE scary as hell. For instance, all the corridors have been brightened, killing the terror and tension as you can just run thru it all - especially with the armor-mounted flashlight. Some may not give a shit and enjoy this remaster for what it is worth as it is a great "starter pack" if you will, but I think the original Doom 3 and ROE are the more authentic experiences. The Lost Mission kicks ass though despite the BFG Edition's shortcomings. And then again, I did receive this for free after having owned Doom 3 and ROE for some time, so that's neat I suppose.

A more horror focused entry in the Doom series, this game is still as fun in 2025 as the first time I played it when it was released in 2004. Fun, dark and unforgiving in higher difficulties, Doom 3 is a fun installment and reimagining of a classic 2.5D game that shaped many FPS games since it released. The BFG edition has many improvements but also some changes in comparison to the original release. This can come down to preference but you can have the best of both versions. I recommend using BFG edition with the BFA mod and HiDef textures for the best experience. I enabled the classic flashlight and configured the settings to match the looks of the original release. That plus the HD textures made my run in 2025 look great while maintaining a dark atmosphere faithful to the original. You can earn achievements playing like this too. Recommended for FPS and Horror fans.

Great concept, not so great execution. There's only so many times I can be jumpscared by the same enemy jumping at me behind a door, watch random bodies being flung around in an attempt to be scary and hearing the same dude laugh in my ear. Did I mention imps love to spawn behind you, like a lot? On top of that, the BFG edition changed a lot of things, and had I known this before reaching the 20th level, I wouldn't have played this version. Guns also feel very weak. You have to be one inch away from an enemy's head to 1 hit kill enemies with the super shotgun, for example. But grenades? Grenades have a life of their own, and a lot of times they probably will bounce back right in your face. A horror DOOM sounded very interesting, but DOOM 3 is more of a comedy than anything. It looks fine, atmosphere is not too shabby. Terrible at being scary, not too bad atmosphere and not much fun as a shooter, but If anything, DOOM 3 is consistent... in its own way.

Pants-ruining on release,. Now? It comes across as so amateurish. Where DOOM 1 &2 are classics that can still be enjoyed today, DOOM 3 marks the begging of ID Software's $60 tech demo phase. DOOM 1 created a genre. DOOM 3 is eclipsed by hundreds if not thousands of indie horror games and even mods. First, the BFG edition changes. Rose-tinted glasses aside, I think they mostly serve to make the game more fun. I don't know a single person on release who played DOOM 3 on PC without the ducktape mod. Purists will say it's for casuls, but even Carmack's design docs didn't have the flashlight as a secondary weapon - it was a hardware limitation of the time. Remember this released on the OG Xbox, NOT the 360. They've also added extra lighting in places which shows off the gorgeous engine that was way, way ahead of the time. There's more ammo and health meaning you can use the 6 good weapons to your heart's content or experiment with the 6 bad ones. DOOM 3 was never hard anyway. The only dam...

Not worth it! Controller support is broken. Can't skip cut scenes. Helm light for those wimps that are too scared. ROE had several areas removed Only real benefit your getting is The lost mission campaign.

Yes, but I think you're better off playing the OG D3+RoE with a mod to modernize them. Unless you like chasing achievements, and trying the Lost Mission (which I don't think is featured in the OG). Then BFG is your thing. Some cons feature the removal of the flashlight, which is now shoulder-mounted with a short battery life that self-recharges (like in HL2); you can carry an extra clip for all ammo... which, of course, this game is pretty generous with anyway; in RoE the toxic tunnels in Phobos are no longer timed, which removes a stressful, yet fun segment; the AI seems more goofy and slow; and worst of all - you cant skip the cutscenes... Even when playing on Nightmare, which suggests you've played at least once before and you're up to speed on the story. All of this is minor, of course, but it adds up to a different experience. You can also play D1 and D2 on GZDoom (zDoom) for free which is superior to the vanilla (included in BFG) in all ways.

DOOM 3: BFG Edition is a definitive re-release of the classic 2004 first-person shooter that revitalized the DOOM franchise with a heavier emphasis on atmosphere and narrative, while maintaining the series’ hallmark intense combat and fast-paced action. Developed by id Software, this edition bundles the original DOOM 3 with its expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil, and includes the classic DOOM and DOOM II games, offering a comprehensive package for both newcomers and longtime fans. The BFG Edition improves on the original with updated visuals, enhanced sound, and gameplay tweaks that help balance the horror and shooter elements, delivering a brutal and immersive experience that holds up well even years after its initial release. The core of DOOM 3 is its richly atmospheric world set in the UAC research facility on Mars, where a teleportation experiment goes horribly wrong and unleashes a demonic invasion. Unlike previous DOOM entries, DOOM 3 leans heavily into horror and suspense, ...
