Falling note or vertical rhythm games live and die by clarity and readability. Rift of the NecroDancer tries to bring its own style to the genre, but the result is a screen that’s far too busy and visually cluttered for the precision this format demands. Between the excessive "bouncy" effects, character animations, and overlapping visual cues, it often feels harder to parse what’s coming than to actually play to the beat. In a genre where your eyes and reflexes need clear information above all else, this level of visual noise becomes a major distraction.

Guitar hero games transmit information to the player in a very clear, simple, consistent way for a reason. Asking the player to keep so many unique behaviors in mind for every note becomes unmanageable at a quick pace and high enemy density. I stopped playing the story mode near the end when I got to the question mark enemies that no longer carry any obvious visual indicators of their behavior. Steamachievements says only 2 people have cleared the hardest achievements in the game. The team is clearly incredibly talented and I adore the art design, especially the use of color (outside the lanes). I also really appreciate the seamless integration of user-generated content. But I don't think the experiment works.
This a Very complex game but, very satisfying When everything clicks into your head. When all of that knowledge that you know. The game shines at it best, and getting a S+ full combo! on any difficulty. The Game becomes super fun! And masterpiece or amazing. Just don't buy the DLC it's overpriced, Need to be fix! But still amazing game.
Overlapping notes were an issue in the demo that the devs claimed they would fix in the final game. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case as there are still, indeed, charts with overlapping (and thus impossible to FC) notes. Will change my review when this is fixed because otherwise the game is decent.
Good thing this game is playable one hand because heph......... What was i saying?
Cool fresh take on rhythm games in the spirit of necrodancer. Lots of depth to train through and improve on, and having a bunch of my favorite indie songs is also great. there's also workshop and dev tool to make anything you'd like.
Some people say coffee is the best start of the day. Some people say running is a great start of the day. They havn't played this game 1st thing in the morning!
what a fun and unique rhythm game. I put off buying it for awhile because the demo scared me off, but the game is doing a good job at teaching it's language to me - it's just like learning guitar hero again for the first time. never thought a rhythm game would come along that had to school me again but it's a wonderful experience to go from scrub to feeling like a badass (even if I'm not even playing on hard yet)
Straight dopamine, injected through your headphones. If you're a fan of rhythm games (particularly Guitar Hero), Rift of the Necrodancer should be in your cart. Rift isn't a basic Guitar Hero clone; it's the next step in the formula. In Rift, you don't just time your button inputs with the beat. Instead, you also have the additional challenge of spontaneously reacting to different enemy types. For example, some enemies require multiple button presses. Some approach you faster than others. Every enemy is unique. Yes, there is a learning curve. You will make mistakes. But if you're up for the challenge, you'll feel like a champ once you've learned everything. Music slaps. And don't kid yourself. You already knew that before you've even played. And if you want a story mode? Well... it's there. Don't expect anything profound. But to be fair, a moving story isn't what I bought this game for. However, if you're interested in playing/making custom levels using (virtually?) any song you ...
Banger Alert Solid game that takes the uh 'combat' of Crypt and I'd say it works quite well as a chart based rhythm game. A good music game needs good music and this does not disappoint, the genres and production are quite standout. The rhythm heaven esc minigames are such a good cherry on top too. Thank you for continuing to shove Miku in my rhythm games I am not being sarcastic in the slightest (real opinion by a real human)
