About This Game

The Newton Mystery is a 2D puzzle platforming adventure where you play as a group of friends who have formed a rag-tag monster crime-solving team. Join them on their journey of self-discovery, wacky interactions, and realizations that everything is not as it seems in the sleepy town of Newton...

- Explore the fascinating world of Newton with 5+ different playable characters

- Swap between the main characters as you attempt to solve puzzles

- Interact with tons of characters and monsters. Each character has a unique dialog so be sure to try and talk to everyone.

Meet the members of The Bird Watching Club:

  • Mac - Mac’s the new kid in town. He can throw his yo-yo to create trampoline platforms and grapple points to help himself and others get to new heights. He can also see into the memories of Newton’s past to discover new secrets and untold history.

  • Tess - As the leader of the bunch, Tess plans out all of the bird watching club’s missions. She can use her magic to turn into a ghost and shoot quick projectiles from her spell wheel. As a ghost, she can phase through walls and hover over long distances. You can bounce her projectiles off of walls to hit precise targets.

  • Lemon - Lemon is the brawn of the group. Use her strong punches and dive kicks to bust your way through any obstacle. While she may seem tough on the outside, she’s really the most reliable member.

  • Phil - The smartest of the gang, Phil is always quick to find clues and point the others in the right direction. He uses his water magic to shoot water bubbles and transform into a fish. This allows him to breathe underwater and swim with ease.

  • Coal - Phil’s cat, Coal, likes to follow the group wherever they go. He can fit into tight spaces and climb up walls to reach places the others can’t.

Upon first seeing this game at the TooManyGames convention, I was immediately sold on it. I had previously played Night in the Woods, and had watched Adventure Time quite a bit before then. I can tell this game draws heavy inspiration from both, with the Night In The Woods-type gameplay and storytelling, and the Adventure Time-inspired visuals. I talked a bit with someone running the table Newton was at, which I'm assuming is one of the developers, and they initially seemed a bit shy and unsure of themselves. I'll just say, you all should be proud of yourselves and the work you've put in. Since becoming a game developer myself, I know how hard it is to make games, and I know that it's a damn miracle when one comes out, because there's so much that goes into it. I'd love to talk game dev stuff with the devs, honestly, because I really respect and enjoy their work, between this and Mason and Strings. This game is great, and if you enjoy side-scrolling adventure games, don't pass this one...

Still very early but its quite fun. Played a good bit at MAGFest 2023 when they were at the booth next to me. Plays a bit like The Lost Vikings. Art is great, music is great, and the dialogue is very amusing. Looking forward to the rest.

I played the demo 2 years ago, was pleasantly surprised to see it's finally out. The puzzle-platforming is very fun, the characters are funny and charming, and the art style is adorable. The bullet hell segments were a fun surprise and the TCG rhythm game is honestly pretty addicting. The narrative is interesting, but I feel like a lot of worldbuilding aspects were left unexplained or too open-ended by the end of the game, which makes me wonder if there's anything else in store for this world. The game is a little buggy at times, and the dialogue has a noticeable amount of typos. For some reason, I sometimes had this issue where the camera lagged but the characters moved fine so I had to slow down until the camera caught up and fixed itself. I also wish all the controls were shown in the title screen or pause menu because I had to figure out some controls for myself, such as the skip text function. Overall, besides the need for some patches, this game is a fun and nostalgic adventure...

I was one of the people who first demo'd this game at the TooManyGames convention in July of 2023. I got to talk to the devs and was very into the game's artstyle and puzzle/platformer nature. I also loved how amusing the dialogue is, and how it helps one invest into the characters in this game. Of course there are some issues. There are some typos here and there, and I was a bit confused with the control scheme at first. But, for it's price, it provides a nice experience that I will probably be revisiting a few more times, if only to revisit the story and characters (which I really enjoyed!) and also to try out the TCG minigame the game offers. This was definitely worth the wait, and I look forward to a sequel or extension to this story.
