About This Game

Operation Downfall

We are all aware that the atomic bombings of August 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki precipitated the Japanese surrender at the end of World Ward II. But what would have happened if the Manhattan Project has failed or known such delays that the bombs could not be made ready in time?

Operation Downfall was the codename for the Allied plan of invasion of the Japanese home islands. The operation had two parts: Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. Set to begin in November 1945, Operation Olympic was intended to capture the southern third of the southernmost main Japanese island, Kyūshū, with the recently captured island of Okinawa to be used as a staging area. In early 1946 would follow Operation Coronet, the planned invasion of the Kantō Plain, near Tokyo, on the main Japanese island of Honshu. Airbases on Kyūshū captured in Operation Olympic, and possibly other captures on nearby Shikoku, would allow land-based air support for Operation Coronet. If Downfall had taken place, it would have been the largest amphibious operation in history.

Japan's geography made this invasion plan quite obvious to the Japanese as well; they were able to accurately predict the Allied invasion plans and thus adjust their defensive plan, Operation Ketsugō, accordingly. The Japanese planned an all-out defense of Kyūshū, with little left in reserve for any subsequent defense operations. Casualty predictions varied widely, but were extremely high. Depending on the degree to which Japanese civilians would have resisted the invasion, estimates ran up into the millions for Allied casualties

In this game you will be able to experience the two landing and the overall amphibious assault against the Japanese home islands in 1945 and 1946.

The game scale is at division level for land units, wings for air units. Naval forces are abstracted and other special weapons such as Kamikaze or Midget submarines represented by events or the play of combat cards. Each region is about 100 square miles, and a turn represents 1 week of real time.

Scenarios vary in length, for 10 to 27 turns. They will offer you various starting options (more troops, more replacements, more air support, different at start positions, airborne operations) that may alter the historical setup and offer vast replayability potential. Soviet intervention in the operation, as planned against the northern island of Hokkaido is also included. And Japanese domestic politics, as well as the role of the Emperor and its protection from capture are also considered.

  • The Japanese have very few mobile troops, armor, artillery and their planes are numerous but outmatched. But they have very strong fixed defenses, well organized and incredibly tough to break, as they account always for the difficult nature of the various terrains of the Japanese islands. They can count also on the loyalty and dedication of their population. Their playing cards and events reflect this, plus the fierce nature of their defense.

  • The Allied forces are well equipped, backed by a strong air force and impressive naval gunfire support, but their timeline and objectives are always very tight to meet, and in particular the need to secure harbors for supplies and airbases to ensure redeployment of tactical air support, all during a rather inauspicious time of the year and poor weather prospects. Those external constraints, but also various other assets, are covered by the diversity of the cards they have in hands.

There were dozens of estimates on how the operation would unfold if it had been undertaken. All concur on Japanese stiff resistance and a huge level of casualties never seen before, a prospect that was potentially raising hell also at home on the US political front.

Opposition between the Navy and the Army in the US was tense on the different aspects of the plan, as well as the means and weapons to be used. Another similar fierce fight existed inside the Japanese power circles between the proponents of the so-called Peace Faction and their adversaries willing to fight till the last of the millions of subjects of the Emperor.

That battle would have been gigantic and of never-seen before proportions, no doubt!

A unique way of portraying what would've been one of the greatest tragedies if it happened. SGS Operation Downfall is a must buy for board game enthusiasts, history buffs like me, or people who enjoy interesting scenarios paired with a game system that rewards strategy, careful consideration and patience. It never felt better to finally break a siege that had been ongoing for about 3 months in Tokyo as I was able to finally be able to move my tanks and artillery into the tile that the siege was occurring on and resupplied my morale broken troops. One of the most fun pseudo board games I've played in a while coming from a person who never got into board games in the first place yet alone something as indepth and complicated as this. (Also the SFX are amazing)

So far I have only tried to win as the Allies in the first scenario provided - Operation Olympic (the first phase of the invasion of Japan), and the best I have managed (after 3 attempts) is a draw against the AI. I have now set the AI to maximum difficulty and am not doing very well - I will have to up my game. Both sides can be played against the AI. This is a good wargame which challenges me and on an interesting topic. Graphics are very reasonable and sound effects functional. I have not experienced any bugs or crashes so far. I would have liked the manual (which is quite extensive) to explain exactly how the difficulty levels are managed, for example is the AI given more firepower, extra units, or is it just plain smarter? - But otherwise no complaints.

Oh dear, another game that won't end so I can never win. I can lose quickly enough, however. How many titles can the developers turn out unfinished?

It would help if the video tutorials were read by someone without a thick accent. I'm on Mac and the cursor jumps all over the place. I can't select any cards much less place them on the pile. Can I get my money back?

Fun 'what if game'; I like the combat system in the SGS series; using cards adds a the element of chance that can swing a battle one way or the other. This keeps the game exciting, especially in big battles where multiple cards can be played. No two play-throughs are exactly the same, which increases replayability. I like games that make me want to replay them.

A really good strategy game in the line of the SGS games. I particularly like the focus on little known campaigns.
