Very fun, absolutely worth the price. What makes Shotgun King unique to me is that instead of solely focusing on creating the best build for yourself, you are also focused on trying to give your opponent the weakest possible build, due to the system of tying player upgrades to opponent upgrades. Many times, you will pick a perk not because it is the better one, but because it gives your opponent a weaker upgrade. I got at least ~30 good hours of gameplay out of this game before it got frustrating, which is above average for most roguelikes. The game has two main problems: 1: difficulty curve for the ascension levels is not smooth at all. You'll probably clear the game on your first run or two, and will hold a very high winrate up until ascension 10 or so. At this point, your winrate will quickly fall into the single digits quite rapidly. By ascension 13/14, the game had begun getting incredibly frustrating, and ascension 15 is just plain awful. High difficulty scaling in roguelikes ...

About This Game
Chess, but all your army has gone over to the white side, leaving you with nothing but your royal shotgun and your wounded pride. Carried by your dark folly, you decide it's time to teach those white pieces to fear the Shotgun King.
Every turn, you may either move your king or shoot at enemy pieces, after what you'll need to move again to reload your shotgun. Avoid checkmate and kill the enemy king to complete the floor. After each floor, you may choose between two random combinations of one upgrade for you and one upgrade for the other side. Choose wisely and keep on winning floors and you just may get your kingdom back.
Runs may take ~20 minutes to complete. The game features 15 ranks of difficulty, unlockable cards, over 100 achievements to complete, an endless mode, and now a chase mode where you get continually assailed from all sides!
The Key To Win In Chess, Is To Blast Your Opponent With A Shotgun

Things I Like About Shotgun King:
Compliments

Controls are smooth with Steam Deck!
It's a turn-based chess roguelike. You play as The Black King armed with a shotgun. It is your duty to blast all traitors to kingdom come. Every action of yours takes a turn: moving, shooting, and reloading. There are exceptions to this rule, such as using soul cards, wand, and grenades.
Moving with shotgun fully loaded generates one shell in the reserve. Moving with empty chamber reloads the gun but you won't generate new ammo. It is important to pay attention to your ammo pool while moving and blasting.
So the main gameplay loop is to take out The White King on the board and the rest will automatically crumble. Your enemies operate on the traditional chess rule. Each of them has their own count-down before they can move.
You have two folly shields each turn serving as warnings that your ne...
I have finished the game. With all achievements. And I have finished a bunch of hard games before. And I can say without hesitation this was the most annoying one to finish. The game actually has a very cool concept. And until you beat throne 15, its a really cool game. But when you come to finish it completely it is full of rng. Thats why I am giving a bad review. Those achievements are not normal. They are not hard. Just annoying.
Would really love to recommend this game, but it constantly crashes for seemingly no reason. Each time was on my deepest runs. Won't be going back. Really sad that this was my experience for game that had some promise.
Chess but a roguelite and you have a shotgun, there's nothing else to say.
I don't think I could actually recommend this to other players, but I wouldn't say it is a bad game or not worth experiencing. Worst case, it's not something a I would not recommend, or I rather I wouldn't discourage someone from experiencing it. There are certainly other issues that peeve me something fierce, but I will provide an example that frustrates me to no end despite being my favorite card: Rats. The amount of times I've died because the game doesn't let the rats kill the piece that kills me is fucking infuriating. That along makes me hate this game. It doesn't make any sense that I am inconsistently killed sometimes by "discovered checks" like killing a pawn that was blocking a rook from seeing me. Sometimes, I kill the pawn with a rat that spawned from a pawn next to it, and I am safe from that "discovered check". Other times, I kill the pawn directly and the rat should kill the rook since it's the next closest piece. The amount of times this inconsistency happens isn't ...
A perfect combination of my deep hatred for chess and a well balanced roguelike. 10/10.
