Very cute little timesink. If you have a spare evening and you just want to make something, anything, and don't want to put too much thought into it, this is an interesting diversion. You can make some really impressive little towns and scenery if you really tinker with it. The game (currently) is only marred by a few annoying niggles 1. The controls are weird. Instead of right-click or ctrl-click to delete, you have to press control and then toggle between deletion modes, and then press tab to go back into creation mode. Really breaks the design flow. Much better to just have left-click to place, and right-click to undo. Use shift-drag to do an area. I'm guessing they had to compromise cos of consoles, but even so, you have more than one button on consoles 2. The tracks don't link up like they do in other train sims. Rather than just "draw" your track, you have to place them down like puzzle pieces, rotating them to fit. Making a track with lots of curves means lots ...

The game is very cozy and relaxing. It is early access so there are some flaws (listed below) but overall it is nothing too big. I really appreciate the various themes, the vibe and calm relaxing soundtrack. Now come the BUTs: - I played the demo enough to know all the features it had. I was happy to get the full version however I noticed some of the features the demo had are missing (like train tracks going inside a castle). I really hope the developers put them back. - The winter theme used to have a slope and christmasy feel to it - where is it? I was so excited about it- and later so disappointed when I could not find it there. - I'd hope for bigger or even unlimited map possibility. - The operating keys are somewhat not intuitive, however I appreciate one can change the keys.
This is a tremendously relaxing game, I've been looking for a nice simple game, where I can alternate between active and passive gameplay, and this has that, in spades. I'm not really into model trains and such, but this is just so easy, setting up a track, building up the scenery, towns, activities is just lovely - then just let it go. I'm hoping at some point we'll be able to zoom out a bit further so we can appreciate our creations. It really is lovely.
cozy train set game, not what i was expecting, but better than i had thought too. It does have controller support, a huge plus for me.
Excellent relaxing game about building train layouts. Reminds me of my childhood days building with wooden Thomas the Tank Engine toys but way more detailed. I know this might not fit into the style but I'd love to see more realistic/detailed locomotives and rolling stock in the future. This game is worth way more than the amount I paid for it.
A very relaxing game. As stated there are no goals or objectives, Islands & trains is a true sandbox. While it may feel pointless to some players, especially those looking for an immersive rail sim, this a great way to "let off some steam" and relive the wonder that is just playing with models.
Super fun and relaxing, so cute to watch the little cosy world you can make just go by
This is a remarkably cozy and relaxing game. It's like building a model train set without any cost or space concerns.
It's very cute and nice, but there are a lot of problems. The controls are buggy and poor, zooming with mouse wheel is super slow, panning around is super slow, even something so simple as clicking on a menu item doesn't always work. The performance is poor, when I zoom out a bit there are massive stutters, which is ridiculous for a game this small. The building system is not very intuitive, it's slightly awkward and tedious, and it lacks in choices, and it takes some time to figure out which pieces might fit together. If this game was better made I would like it, but at this point I think I will return it because I don't see myself playing this.
A really polished, relaxing and beautiful game. Unlike other titles in this genre you can add all of the details of your world yourself which allows for some fun creativity and scenic design. I really enjoy building up whole towns, rivers and mountains and connecting them all with the train set pieces you are given. My only complaints would be a lack of a First Person mode, it's a shame you can't explore the little world you've built from the ground, that would be a very welcome feature! Also there seems to be a lack of bridge types which I think is a bit of a bummer, I'd love to be able to make natural arcs and floating land pieces to connect my trains a little easier. Overall though it's an excellent game and I can't recommend it enough for only $5! If you enjoy peaceful building games this is one you really don't want to miss.
