Uootoy 3671

Mindware continues to revive old, somewhat obscure Japanese indie titles, and bringing awareness to their existence. Not content with a mere re-release, they usually do their own take on these games, keeping the old spirit and original gameplay mechanics, while adding lots of new content, and the quality of life features one expects from a recent title. Uootoy 3671 may be their best release yet. The game is a charming and addictive puzzle platformer, where users must use their creativity to beat the extensive amount of levels available. This is the sort of game where you aren't tied to one solution, you truly have free reign in finding various ways (some surely not even expected by the developers) to reach the goal. Besides the wonderful retro pixel art presentation, 3 soundtrack variants (one by the great Junko Ozawa), and a very generous amount of content (200+ stages, a number that keeps on growing, with additional stage packs being released), the game has a very easy to use stage...

I'm a fan of Mindware games generally, and have been waiting for this one for a while. It's proving different and interesting. Not having played the original Uootoy I had assumed it would be somewhat like Solomon's Key or Lode Runner, which on some level it is, but it actually plays like a more cerebral MegaMan/Rockman due to the platforming elements and need to evade surprising projectiles. The level design has, so far, been really good. It's old school - you die, a lot, but with that comes more satisfaction at beating it. Mindware has a talent for updating 8 bit graphics. Here rather than arcade mania (like in Alien Field) it's slower and more detailed, which suits the game perfectly. This is how we imagined those home computer games of the 80s to be. This is probably the Mindware game with the widest appeal. It's also very good, and deserves to get that bigger audience. We should all hope to be real penguins.

Filled to the brim with challenging well designed levels, tight responsive controls, an excellent soundtrack and a level editor so the fun doesn't end. It's peak arcade styled puzzle action.
