CHECK OUT THE NEW GAME FROM BLOOBER TEAM

About the Game

The canvas awaits its final brushstrokes. The stage calls for its lead actor. The novel needs its final chapter. It’s time to face your fears. One. Last. Time.

The series, which has left a mark on narrative-driven first-person psychological horror games, returns to tell its final spine-chilling story in Layers of Fear.. The series’ crowning work is the definitive way to experience the critically acclaimed franchise as it features Layers of Fear and Layers of Fear 2, as well as all DLCs (including the new ‘The Final Note’ DLC that will give you a new perspective on the Layers of Fear storyline) and the never-before-told story of The Writer, which will tie everything together. Built on Unreal Engine 5, Layers of Fear supports Ray Tracing, HDR and 4K resolution to make the stunning visuals, and your nightmarish experience, as immersive and realistic as possible.

Layers of Fear: Create Your Magnum Opus
“The one precious thing you ever truly desired… FINISH IT.”

Explore a Victorian mansion covered in artwork as The Painter, whose sanity crumbles and cracks just like old oil paint on canvas. Trawl through the ever-changing house to find the supplies needed for your greatest masterpiece, all while trying to outrun your past.
Inheritance DLC: Face Your Past

“I was once told insanity runs in my family… It’s time to make it stop.”

Told from the perspective of The Painter’s Daughter, you come seeking answers. What secrets does this homestead hold? Will you ever truly understand the madness that bestowed your father? Can you ever forgive him? The house may hold everything you need to know... if you can face reliving your past.

The Final Note DLC: Delve Even Deeper

A brand new DLC which aims to shed more light on The Painter, his muse and the family’s backstory, The Final Note is told from the perspective of The Painter’s Wife. This additional narrative may change how you see the characters of the first game, as well as their actions.

Layers of Fear 2: Hit Your Marks

“Time waits for no one, actor. Do not waste ours.”

You are the lead actor in a production being filmed aboard an ocean liner, but all is not what it seems. Explore the ship and discover why you were perfect for The Director’s (voiced by Tony Todd) latest film. You awake and are told one simple command “Act.” But will you?

The Final Prologue

The first expansion to Layers of Fear 2’s storyline allows you to step into the director’s seat and take the reins of a troubled Hollywood production. Immerse yourself into the psyche of the movie’s creator as you seek to complete your final masterpiece, even as the set around you descends into chaos.

It’s up to you to direct the action and make sure that what’s in the script makes it onto the silver screen. Experiment with different takes and try to fulfill your vision of the ultimate horror movie, all while battling inner demons and external forces that threaten to derail the whole production.

This latest chapter in the Layers of Fear anthology is available as a FREE UPDATE for all current Layers of Fear owners. The Final Prologue is playable as a separate chapter within the game’s menu.

The Lighthouse Chapter: Link the Layers

Enter a lone and ghastly lighthouse as the newest protagonist, The Writer, and discover a never-before-told tale which will tie the entire series together. What awaits you there? You’ll just have to find out.

I've played the original Layers of Fear, as well as its sequel. This is something else. This is an amalgamation of the most boring parts of both games, along with some extra content from other games. I wanted to show my partner some of the trippy stuff that happens in the first game, but all of that was taken out. It's nothing but doors that move around a little and some jump scares that aren't even scary. The game also has some major bugs that make it easy to get stuck in a single room, forcing the player to restart the game because there are no save files accessible to the player. Unfortunate that they did these games so dirty. They used to be good.

Sometimes a studio creates a game so unintentionally good, they may never be able to replicate the success that the game had; Or, at least, that was my impression upon completing the original Layers of Fear 2 (2019), as a long-time fan of Layers of Fear (2016) and >observer_. Having completed this 2023 remake containing both of the original games, it is very clear to me now that even the Bloober Team themselves no longer have any idea what made the game that launched them to become one of the mainstream horror game developers so great in the first place; Graphical improvements are the most notable positive change, and even then I would argue that the color balance was way better in the original games, which does take away a fair share of mood the original games were meant to set. The 2016 installment's original story and atmosphere both were completely butchered with the new gameplay mechanics and oversimplifications (including the many annoying voiceovers taking away the mystery) ...

I want to love it, I really do. After the first Layers of Fear being my favorite game I really wanted to love this one but they just butchered it.. I do not know how else to say it. I BEG you to buy the original Layers of Fear (2016) and experience the game the way I have. The reason I do not like this version is because they added things that take away the isolation I felt while playing the game. You can look outside the window now, they added voice overs (Which are everything but fitting) and when you pick something up you can see yourself holding it instead of it being isolated in a black background. This all leaves no room for imagination. I do not know how to explain this to someone who has not played both games.
Re-experience the old tragedies from a fresh point of view
I was very ambivalent about the remake of the Layers of Fear series which was already successful in my opinion, doubting the developers' ability to add anything new or interesting to the game. However, I must admit that I was partially wrong; the atmosphere thickens with tension compared to the first original one with the threat of a monster, improved graphics and fighting mechanics. The stories being less reliant on symbolism and more on clarity promoted immersion, and the characters felt more fleshed out with extra dialogue and notes. The struggles of the painter materialized now in an even more engaging way, but the actor's story failed to provide anything that would warrant a remake of an already impressive adventure. Having to sit through what felt like a copy-paste bored me to death, but at least Bloober Team added three new perspectives into this amalgam of narratives: writer, musician and director. Some qu...

art is nice, story is good. game is shit. frustrating and obtuse on purpose, goes out of its way to make you feel lost and reach for alt-tab. if you don't moonlight as a gimp, you might not have a great time playing this. edit - it was suggested i try safe mode. guess i've reached the age where this doesn't offend me and i actually did. for a while it was an improved experience, no more running around at the speed of a limping turtle, getting stuck on junk like toy cubes, trying to find the next thing w. high likelihood of death and reset. I wasn't having a bad time, and wanted to find out how the story wraps up. but then i got to the tiktok filter puzzle and realized that i was done. they got all that accessibility stuff on the menu, but this bs went in? if you are not battling a frustration fetish, i'd steer clear.

I would give this a neutral review if possible. There is plenty to like about this game at first. The visuals are phenomenal. Other than lacking a field of view slider, which was probably a deliberate choice for some of the game mechanics, I cannot say enough about how good the game looks. Unfortunately, some of the foggier and darker environments aren't as nice because they appear washed out, even on an OLED screen. Still, S-tier visual presentation. The sound design is also very good. Most of the voice acting is fantastic. The thunder, rain, and other atmospheric sounds are very immersive. No notes about the music, so it didn't bother me. I really had no complaints about any of the audio. It's done well. Audio is arguably the most important part of any game attempting horror and they did not miss here. The gameplay is where this one falls apart for me. It plays much like an Amnesia game without physics objects in the environment. You're generally slow and can use the mouse t...

The visuals are great. Not much else is. For a game that is called "Layers of fear". I was literally falling asleep at some sections of the game. Very little sense of fear or urgency. I felt like they were trying wayyyy to hard to be interesting or scary. They misunderstood what it means to be a scary game. Games like Infliction: Extended cut are perfect examples. Cheap, unreal engine asset game. One of the scariest games I've played due to sound design and the understanding that less is more. They definitely thought more was more with this one... Artists story is by far the best. (Layers of fear 1) I didn't even bother with the dlc stories because I was so bored... Severely disappointed. If you're looking for a game that's flashy and visually appealing. You've found it. If you're looking for a horror game with actual layers of fear. Look elsewhere. To games like Infliction, The beast within, Outlast, Visage, LUTO. (Luto came out recently and is friggin amazing!!!)
