About This Game

Gemlands is a love-letter to that golden era of Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 3D platformers, in a 1st person metroidvania-lite package!

The evil Dimensional Witch has started turning residents of Gemlands into critters and animals; it's up to you to talk to the locals, acquire new tools, and progress your way up the central tower and through the mini-pocket worlds that the Witch has created.

Each "zone" of the game is essentially a small, mini-biome with its own NPCs, and gems and items to collect, which you can keep track of by bringing up a handy menu anytime for those completionists out there.

Local legends also tell of the Secret Isles which can only be accessed by the best adventurers, and provides a higher challenge as well as even more gems to collect!

Note: As mentioned, this game is shorter and will take only a few hours to 100% complete

This looked like it would be a fun indie clone of Spyro the Dragon...until I noticed my CPU use was stuck at 100%. And this is after the "CPU use fix" patch was implemented. No other game I've ever played has done this to my CPU, and I've played plenty of modern games on my rig. I hope the creator of the game sees this review and tries to fix whatever has gone wrong here. If it's even possible anymore. My guess is that you can't put the entire game world into a single area, because then it's all being processed at once. Look up optimization tutorials for your game engine and try to find if there's a way to only load in certain sections of the game at a time, depending on which section the player is in. I really want to enjoy Gemlands but not at the expense of killing my PC.

UPDATED REVIEW: April 11, 2022: In less than 24 hours after I sadly felt that I needed to give this game my "Not Recommend" because the original FOV was locked in too low and made me feel queasy to play the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lCVmurXwo I also suggested below in my original review that they added sound sliders and resolution options as well as an option to play the game in windowed mode. This indie developer took my review and listened! They quickly added FOV options to help with my feeling queasy as I explained in my original review video! They also added resolution options, windowed or fullscreen options and sound sliders for both the music and sound effects! ..Wow! Now we not only have a fun little indie adventure game that I can recommend, but we also have a nice, fun and very affordable game that I'm going to give a very impressive 8.5 first impressions score! ..and that score might even increase if I play the game more and see it get more challenging...

I first found out about this little game on a random post I found on Reddit, asking people to check out a guy's first game release on Steam. I found myself rather hesitant as I do not particularly find myself enjoying indie games that much. But, seeing how enthusiastic its developer sounded I found myself tempted to at least have a look what this game was all about. One look at the store page and I found myself loving the simple yet appealing art style of the game. Now, about the game itself. Simply put, incredibly creative and surprisingly fun! The variety of the environments combined with some butt clinching parkouring all made for an exciting little game. One minor point of criticism I have is that the boss fight at the end was incredibly short and easy, it also would've been nice to see every weapon be used as I found that the bow was a bit neglected here. In conclusion, if you find yourself looking for a short but fun little game. Get yourself gemland and start collecting those g...

Reviewing to feed the Steam algorithm. Quaint and amateurish, but charming. The blue and yellow secret islands were a little less fun, but overall I enjoyed my time. Good for players who like to just explore, collect things, and chill.

Could have used a sprint button. I like it cause it reminds me of my Minecraft builds.

It doesn't feels as much like a collectiathon as a child friendly version of one of those Only Up, and Bennet Foddy type games. Still has some 3d platforming goodness though. A couple small buds but nothing game breaking. Couple hours of fun for a couple bucks you can't go wrong.
