About This Game

Arik's been told two things all his life: a tyrant is ruling the country, and somebody needs to do something.

Now forced to flee his house after a midnight attack, his parents captured and his house torched—maybe somebody means you.

It's time to gather a party, head to the capital, and take the Lord down. Along the journey, this crew of old friends and new strangers will grow closer—or further apart—as your choices guide Arik to win friends, make enemies, play matchmaker, and break hearts.

Romance is not guaranteed: messiness is.

Especially when you're travelling with friends:

  • Announce your brilliant plan...then glimpse a party member silently rolling their eyes in the corner of the screen
  • Learn to correctly pronounce someone's name, permanently updating the UI
  • Nickname your lover after the stupid thing they said that one time
  • Learn how to make your friends laugh
  • Have a poorly judged hookup really early on and then spend the rest of the playthrough awkwardly trying not to address it
  • Experience the thrill of almost, but not quite, holding hands with somebody you love
  • Make one bad decision and then try to redeem yourself while everyone makes snide comments
  • Tell three characters in one day that they're the love of your life, then navigate the fallout
  • And a lot more of that sort of thing

Features

  • A defined and illustrated player character with his own personality, affected by and responsive to your choices
  • Four unique party members to befriend, betray, woo or wingman
  • The potential for romantic, platonic, sexual, antagonistic, and polyamorous relationships with different party members
  • No premature bad endings: every choice affects your playthrough, without ending it
  • A single playthrough takes 3-4 hours, multiple playthroughs required to uncover the truth
  • Unlockable graphic inserts by award-winning comic artist Hien Pham
  • Dynamic and immersive sound design underscored by original post-rock soundtrack

This game is deeply unfun. I kept waiting for it to get better because it has such positive reviews, but it doesn't get better. The dialogue is extremely unnatural and strange. The few choices you get are not satisfying at all, and most of the time none of them were things I wanted to say. The characters are all the worst. They're constantly lying and betraying your trust and you're character doesn't do anything at all to help resolve that. The pacing is way off. Most of the party are people you don't know and if you get to know them at all it's off screen. The ones your character knows you never get to know as a player because that already happened off screen, so you're left feeling disconnected the whole game, and it's a game about relationships. The world seems almost interesting, but you only get vague hints and everything seems more interesting when your own imagination is filling in all the gaps. And this is a story told entirely in gaps. You don't know enough to care abou...

Unfortunately not for me, and sadly I slept on it long after I purchased it so I can't refund it. I just genuinely did not enjoy my time with it, which makes me feel bad since it clearly has a lot of love put into it.

It's a good small VN, the art is good, sound effects are good, music is OK, it move well, and it has the necessary QOL that every modern VN has now. The game really shines at what it sells : interesting dynamic and relationships between characters What's a little disappointing is that the characters are too one dimensional, with little depth. The main plot line is too simple, too short. I Think you are supposed to try each characters routes but honestly can't bother. Outside Reckon, which is a complex character, all the others are insuferable in their own ways.

Amarantus is a beautifully complex story on the messiness of revolution and even messier relationships. Every decision you make matters but it doesn't stray you away from making questionable decisions. All the characters are so layered and so dynamic, added by the animations. Amarantus pushes the medium of visual novel to the fullest extent and it makes it's world so much richer for it.

The lack of choice is STAGGERING, should've just made this a short story rather than a game, so boring.
