About the Game

UNRAVEL THE PAST

From the creators of Contrast and We Happy Few, South of Midnight is a spellbinding third person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South.

As Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of Southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family's shared past and - if she's lucky - find her way to a place that feels like home.

A DARK MODERN FOLKTALE

When a hurricane rips through Prospero, Hazel is pulled into a Southern Gothic world of memory made real and must embark on a journey to rescue her mother and safeguard her hometown. In this folktale for modern times, Hazel will need to reconcile the weight of family, history, and legacy against her own identity.

CONFRONT MYTHICAL CREATURES

Wield an ancient power to restore creatures and uncover the traumas that consume them. Cast weaving magic to fight destructive Haints, explore the diverse regions of the South, and reweave the tears in the Grand Tapestry.

HAUNTING BEAUTY OF THE GOTHIC SOUTH

Discover the lush, decayed county of Prospero and its locals. Experience a crafted visual style, touching storytelling, and immersive music inspired by the complex and rich history of the South.

Criminally underrated. The gameplay can be simpler, but it's still well done. Holy hell, the presentation and storytelling here make up for any shortcomings. The game looks gorgeous and runs beautifully, bolstering its older UE4 engine with an incredible artstyle. I'm a fan of stop motion animation too, so the little filter they used on certain creatures and in cutscenes was really cute. The soundtrack may be one of the best ever made for games too. Give this one a go if you love story-heavy games!

I have mixed feelings about this game. This game is visually stunning, and a love letter to black and New Orleans culture. I can tell so much care went into this game, from the unique, believable characters, the excellent script writing, and the artistic depiction of Louisiana and its magic. I'm from here, and it's beautiful how they celebrate the bayou and every kind of person down here. The lead is a strong, independent, young black female character. The game tackles real themes about love, loss, and secrets the ones closest to us hold, confronting the darkness inside us that we all hide away. There's several songs written specifically for the monsters in this game, which I think is a great touch. But there's also a lot lacking. The controls of this game feel clunky. The game is really linear, always running down one defined path instead of searching around. The collectibles are just letters and feels disconnected to the story. You're pretty much just running through. There's...

It was a sweet story with fun game play. Although the biggest draw for me was the visuals. Just gorgeous

the fact that "Shaking Bones" in the trailler was the reason why I got the game and I didn't to see him until Chapter 13 (out of 15) AND he didn't have the iconic song performance of the trailer did put a bad taste in my mouth. Graphics wise: it was a bit of a let down in comparession to the announcement trailer, but it did have it's beautiful nature shots (even if it does clearly feel like you typical unreal game in most cases) Gameplay wise: It is a VERY mid game, most gameplay elements aren't good enough to spark enjoyment. the main character was the whitest black girl I ever had the misfortune to listen to. I can't blame the Voice actress, how I do blame whoever wrote her dialogue. HOWEVER, the Voice acting and music ALONE were THE BEST part of the experience (and for that I recommend just listening to the OST ) over all if the south and the detla feel to things are something you really love, you'll enjoy about 40% of this game and I HEAVILY RECOMMEND to buy it at a H...

This game was so much fun to play, there are some repetitive parts of the game play, but I feel as though the story makes it all worth it. South of Midnight is such a beautiful game, story, art, and music wise. I really wish there were more games similar in this style, if there are, maybe I just haven't found it yet.

I'm still in the process of playing this game, but I highly recommend South of Midnight. Beautiful story about healing and generational spirituality in black culture.

Very great game! 10/10 story telling so far. Combat is great! I love how in the first chapter you can see 3 bosses sitting in the window in Pearls home! The music is amazing as well!

Couldn’t stand initial bit. Boring gameplay. The handholding tutorial couldn’t interest me enough not to refund.

I went in blind with this game and thought it was just going to be a fun little game exploring deep south lore that isn't talked about or used in modern entertainment, but I was blown away by the story line and how it kind got to me? The story is basically about the main character trying to find her mother after she was swept away in a flood. The voice acting was awesome and every voice matched well with their characters. I wasn't sure I would enjoy the graphics, but it went well with the eclectic, funky and unique aesthetic of the Louisiana area. Everything almost looks embroidered or stitched and I really loved how unique it was. The gameplay is my only complaint. A lot of the combat felt very stiff and I would often be forced to lock onto the wrong target, I would have to move away from the mob I was trying to latch onto to fix it. A lot of the dashes were slower than the attack I was trying to avoid, forcing me to take damage as well. The wall dashing was also extremely frus...
