This game is just a big waste of time. 90% of the time you will be walking up and down the city, facing waves after waves of harmless enemies just to trigger the next endless dialogue. Occasionally (every hour or so) you will engage in some boss battle, which represents the only real challenge of the game. The problem is that some of them are not very well designed while some others are bugged (anybody said Tsuiko?), resulting in a very frustrating experience. If you really want to play a good beat em up, do yourself a favour and get Final Vendetta, SoR4 or even Sifu.

As much as I want to like it, the controls are annoying or won't work at all...
I think I expected another linear Beat 'Em Up and was really pleasantly surprised by this one. I never played the first game, so some things were lost on me, but this was a pretty great free-roaming experience with a ton of characters, gorgeous pixel art, great enemy variety, and a lot of personality. Move combinations feel great and reasonably expressive, and the music is FANTASTIC. The Double Dragon DLC also integrates rather seamlessly, and both characters are a ton of fun. I especially appreciated any time Jimmy was meta about his age and the fact that he doesn't go to high school. The game isn't without its flaws: navigating between screens can be a pain, the map could be improved, only 2 item slots is kind of silly, needs more locations to purchase/unlock moves, some kind of better level-sync between characters would be great (I like to switch characters regularly), and general QOL things could be done to inventory and shops. And also cutting down some of the dialogue as...
River City Girls is a really fun game, especially if you’re playing with friends. The combat and style keep it entertaining, but there are a few things that make you stop and think, “Why did they make it like this?” First off, the loading is bad. Instead of keeping the map connected, every section has a loading screen. It would’ve made way more sense to just have loading between the cities, not every little area. Then there’s the lag. When you join in with friends, there’s like a 60% chance the game starts lagging, the only fixes are switching regions or just waiting to play another day. Boss fights can also get annoying, some feel more unfair than fun. On top of that, the achievements are mostly just about collecting stuff around the map. With all the loading screens, finding them all takes way longer than it should. Even with all that, the game is still fun overall, just make sure to only play it with friends, not alone. 6/10
Great co-op beat-em-up with a fun sense of humor.

I’m just a river city girl living in a river city world
Great gameplay, pixelart, soundtrack, combos, characters, loved it. I would play it again.
