STORY

In the city of Atro, a clandestine organization dedicated to vengeance has recruited a supernatural being known as a 'shadow spawn'. Unburdened by a human soul and composed of pure darkness, his incredible powers make him an unparalleled killer. When the immortal leader of the Vengeance Guild reawakens, she sends him on a mission that will forever change the world.

GAMEPLAY

'EX' feature, more commonly seen in the fighting game genre. Alongside the traditional HP and SP meters, a third EX meter allows characters to 'meter burn' the majority of their skills! For example, a skill that has a small circular area-of-effect can be meter burned to target all onscreen enemies. Or a combo skill can use the character's EX meter to boost its damage by the number of hits in the combo. Which skill to meter burn in which battles will allow deep player strategy and enable different approaches to the challenges of the game.

Alongside the battles, the player's choice of party (max of 3 characters) will change the way they explore the environments in the game! The 8 characters in the game all have 'exploration skills', ranging from telekinetically floating out of range treasure chests, to charming on screen enemies, to speaking with the dead for hints about the current dungeon. Bringing certain characters along with you will open up new options in previously visited areas.

"Shadow Fate" is one of the best JRPGs I've played in a long time. Among the ones made with RPG Maker VX Ace, it's my favorite one together with "Forever Home". If classic old-school JRPGs with turn-based combat are up your alley, you won't regret buying this massive adventure (40+ hours of playtime). Story: Spawn, an embodiment of human sin, is summoned by the Vengeance Guild that ostensibly fights crime in the city of Atro. When Spawn learns about the Vengeance Guild leader Ysella's true goal (which is to summon Ioro, the Devourer, an entity beyond the mortal realm that prevents humans from reaching paradise), Spawn is forced to flee. Together with other party members that get involved, he must first fight to live another day, until the party is strong enough to thwart Ysella's and Ioro's ambitions. It's a well-executed save-the-world story with a few twists and many shades of gray. There are also implications about our wasteful lifestyle, and despite themes like "human sin", the ga...

Man, I love this game so much. There's obviously a ton of love poured into this game and I've played a lot of RPG Maker games, this is by far one of, if not, the best thus far. My favorite thing (other than the amazing mapping and character development) is that you actually have to put some effort into winning battles if you don't wanna get pummeled. Also, the characters and story are top notch. Totally a recommend for me.

I've just streamed this game for about 5 hours and enjoyed every moment of the game so far. The characters are all very strong and you get pretty attached to them very quickly. All the graphics and animations are exceptionally well done, along with a very unique and highly enjoyable battle mechanic. Every battle is different, it's not just a "click the same buttons each fight" game, so prepare to have to think quite considerably each turn. I'm engrossed so far in the story line and how it will pan out, looking forward to playing this all the way to the end. This game is absolutely beautiful. THIS is what a RPG Maker game made with love/passion looks like! You can see it with every detail of the game! From combat animations/skills, mechanics in the fights to even the cool little attacks monsters/bosses can do using their environment. Honestly, nothing about this game is boring... I'm used to many RPGs being boring in combat but this one keeps me on my toes and is never a simple "just press the Attack button" The story so far is amazing. 10/10 Would recommend.

Great game but wow the difficulty feels a little over-tuned even on the easiest setting. Even some of the early boss fights feel like you're burning through consumables super fast and a lot of turns are just spent waiting around on resources which makes for a slow fight. The story is interesting but I just feel like the combat could use some work. It just doesn't -feel- good, you know? The EX system feels a little underwhelming and unrewarding and SP feels like a chore. Clearly a lot of thought went into these but to me it feels like it's different just for the sake of being different. Overall it's a solid game that I'd recommend at least giving a try. If you can handle the combat you'll be rewarded with a cute story with a pizza loving shadow ninja.

I'm having a blast with the game so far, and will edit once I'm done. The game play is fun and the customization on the character abilities is easy and makes for a unique fighting style. There's a lot of little things in the game that you wouldn't normally find in just any RPG maker game. Its very well put together!

Not enough pizza Edit: since the developer responded to me and having played more of the game I thought I should write a more well thought out review which I don't usually do. I'm still not too far into the game but I'm really loving it so far. Shadow Fate may very well end up being one of the best RPG maker games I've ever played. The story is very well presented with good pacing that slowly unravels more of the plot and world as you progress in a way that is keeping me very interested. There are so many side quests and optional places to explore that one doesn't usually see in games like this. The combat system is refreshingly complex with a great variety of skills and enemies that offer a decent challenge. This game is clearly a labor of love and deserves a lot more attention. Great job.

SHADOW FATE is a dynamic, long-form JRPG, reminiscent of the classic Final Fantasy titles of yesteryear. You play as a Shadow Spawn, brought to life to do the bidding of several characters in their own way. As more members join your party and travel the immersive world with Spawn on his trek to eliminate the evil-beings of the Vengeance Guild, the complexity of the lives of these characters grows as they begin to learn information about their past that shows just how intertwined they are. With loads of party combinations and a multitude of learnable skills, you can customize your main party to fit any playstyle you desire—and in order to win against the complex boss mechanics, you’ll need to! If you’re sick of boring JRPGs where it feels like all you do is mash attack, SHADOW FATE is for you! The battle system is detailed and full of combo-making potential as you explore to find gear that fits your needs. Attention to detail is a must in order to be successful in this game. With...
