‘Shores of Loci’ is a 3D jigsaw puzzle of sorts in which you will be building little islands full of life and detail to the point that they look like little dioramas and then those little islands become real-sized ones once they are finished. It is well worth mentioning the level of detail that has gone into these puzzle islands as it really is incredible, like holding a small piece of land in your hands and feeling like a god as you build the islands back together. It’s slow-paced, relaxing and shouldn’t give most puzzle fans much hassle as there is a hint system in place once you hold don’t a piece for long enough. While there are only 4 worlds it will take you a good hour or so to get through them all and by the looks of things there are more to come in the future. I would have liked it to have been a bit cheaper than the current £11.39 asking price, but I think the amount of effort that has gone into the models still makes it worth the purchase.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/eqLYTxrnpC0 Shores of Loci is basically a 3D jigsaw puzzle game using completely three dimensional puzzle pieces that naturally fit together (versus the traditional jigsaw puzzle pieces). You'll have to look closely at the puzzle pieces from all sides to find connecting roads, bridges, pillars, etc. in order to connect them to each other. The game currently consists of 4 themed world levels and it took me approximately 2.5 hours to complete the game. There is a hint system in case you get stuck, but I recommend not using it if at all possible, even if you're stuck. The hint system did not work on the last level, so you will have to just learn to look at the pieces closely. I will say that while I did enjoy the art style and the game in general is beautiful to look at, with flying birds and swimming dolphins in the background, the visuals overall were a bit too low resolution and a bit ...
This reminds me a lot of what was going on back in 2016 with VR. There's a sense of epic, awe, and the magic only possible in a VR environment. Those pioneering demos like Irrational Exuberance, and early simple games like Water Bears really sold what was possible with VR. This game is exactly what you show to people that are trying it for the first time, everything here captures that magical feeling i first had 6 years ago. One thing i'd like to point out that others haven't really delved in to, nothing here is stylised. Everything is super sharp and finely detailed, again harking back to the early days. One or two issues. Like pointed out in another review, it's easy to overdo the grab when hauling in the pieces from any kind of distance. They do come back most of the time, there was a couple of times where i had to look around, perhaps an option to turn down the strength of the grabbing action. Another slight issue was probably more on me, playing seated and with the index control...
I recommended this game for the sheer artistry it able to offering me. And I'm always had a soft spot for something unique in such department (art). But we are talking about video game here, So the presentation and being "artistry" alone doesn't cut, So how's the gameplay you may ask. Well, Lets jogging back into your memories a bit, Remember first time you play something like Lego or Jigsaw, or perhaps building a sand castle or clay? Yeah, This game gave you that kind of moment back to you again. But this time in a VR and you can inspecting detail on each of piece of puzzle in a way that only VR could offering to you. Shore of Loci is about you picking pieces of "puzzles" and figuring about which go where, Simple as that. The best part is when you are realizing that your "pieces of puzzle" are getting much bigger, much grander and more elegant as you are progressing through the game. So this is where a little Con start to kicking in, The gameplay are just that, You are fix in one ...
Using Index and RTX 3090 I got solid 90 fps using res 400% - did use a 10-core i9 10900K cpu too, but gpu is the more important hardware in this game. It's a simple 3D puzzle game - feels like having to get big pieces of a Lego set to fit. Graphics are great, and I consider this more of a game to reduce stress and to relax. Puzzle games like this are nothing new, there's really no originality to this game - apart from being in VR. I have to agree that it's much like the Tetris VR game - we've seen it all before, but graphics are great and it's still fun for a while. Had some issues with pieces floating away or being hidden. One time did have to reset a level and lost all progress because a piece floated away and was impossible to get back. Then again, this is early access, some patience may be needed. I'm not sure this game should cost more than $10-15, so it's probably priced just right now. For being a simple 3D puzzle game with close to no originality I'd rate the game 6/10 - e...
The game starts well, but eventually the pieces you need disappear under the ground you stand on, and it's impossible to continue. I was able to get through level 1, but at level 2, I was unable to see or get the pieces I required to assemble the landscape. Poor design in preventing the needed puzzle pieces from being visible, or even available.
I voted Shores of Loci for the Sit back and relax-award with, in my opinion, good reason. The game is essentially a puzzle. Y'know, the kind where a number of pieces fit together in a certain way to make a picture. In Shores of Loci you do that, except you're puzzling together a place. Not just any place, mind, but a series of places, grouped by different architectural styles and surroundings. The places are even inhabited by, well, some sort of inhabitants, going about their business. This is to me, at least, very relaxing. While the puzzling may occasionally throw you for a loop, there's no pressure, no leveling or score to be chased. Just the finishing of another intricate place to enjoy looking at. The graphics are gorgeous! The controls are simple. The pace and the places are relaxing. Coming back here every now and then is a bit of an antidote to hectic life in the real world. A pocket-sized vacation, if you like. PS. This runs without a hitch on my aging system. (i5-8400, GT...
Loved this puzzle game! Graphics are amazing and 3d puzzle element was fun and entertaining. MORE MORE MORE LEVELS PLEASE!!!!! Revision: Once the game went to full version it is buggy with pieces of the puzzle going underneath the floor and you have to blindly press the trigger in order to find them to finish. Until this gets fixed, I can no longer recommend this game, It's so frustrating!
Playing on Valve Index, works fine. For all 4 puzzles 2 hours playtime for me. Initial review: I have only finished the first 2 puzzles, will update again later. Such a beautiful game! The environment and the puzzles are amazing to look at. Controls are good, the menu also shows your progress, which is nice, and the music is very relaxing. You have the option to reset your progress for one level or the whole game, in case you want to play several times or with multiple persons (no separate profiles though). The puzzles I've seen so far are very detailed and look great. The first one was still pretty easy, the second one is a little harder already. Still doable so far though. I love that snapping sound when you push together the right pieces, so satisfying! I like that you actually have to take your time to look at those beautiful puzzle pieces to see how they fit together. It's kind of challenging and relaxing at the same time. Update after completing all 4 puzzles: It took me about...
Game is amazingly beautiful and very satisfying to play !
