Those Who Rule rules over the indie PC SRPG genre

Overview
Those Who Rule is one hell of an impressive game. I will eventually play through it again and enjoy that – but at the moment really need to go through a massive backlog to give other games a fair chance. Make no mistake though, this game is probably the absolute best Steam alternative to Fire Emblem. I’m a huge fan of the genre and while I also really like Lost Eidolons and its spin-off, I think Those Who Rule reigns supreme with an inspiring and charming dev at its helm who masterfully blends an engaging story, a diverse cast of lovable characters, beautiful art, and challenging but fun game mechanics into a really damn good game. Most of all, while it’s a Fire Emblem like game, it does quite a lot of innovation to stand out as its own game while hitting all the right notes that make the genre so enjoyable. The raw game-play is quite well done, it absolutely has the bones of a fun game but this project clearly would have benefited from a larger team. The 2D art is largely gen-AI, unpolished and distracting. The characters are annoying and entirely one-dimensional. The sound design is repetitive and the music generally unexciting. The user interface is clunky and obtuse to the point of unusability on a controller. Though admittedly the actual combat is almost perfect. If you're a skipper of cut-scenes, and the above points don't dissuade you then this is an excellent and strategically interesting fire-emblem clone, but as a total package I found it very lacking.

solid game at the price point. it's nothing revolutionary, but what it does it does do well. if you're a fan of Fire Emblem, X-Com, Jagged Alliance, Wildermyth, and their like, this is for you.

A game with good game play held back by terrible and frustrating interface choices. There's no "restart level" option, so every time you want to restart because someone died, or you didn't achieve all the objectives, you have to drudge back through all this dialogue and stuff. It gets really annoying if you're a perfectionist trying to get each mission "just right." That's the fun of games like this to me. I know its just one guy making the game, but come on, man. Add a "restart level" option for the love.

Solid little turn-based rpg. Diverse classes and capabilities with a number of progression paths to choose from, decent loot & item upgrade systems albeit a bit throttled through miserly coin earning, and good plot with set of different characters, each pretty unique. I think the difficulty tiers are bit harder than they should be. This might be part of why the completion rate is quite low--the mid game is particularly frustrating without being on self-flagellation difficulty levels for those who got gud or whatever. But all in all a solid ~25hour game that's a good value proposition for both your dollar and your time.

Highly recommend this game, the developer deserves major kudos for working solo to create an indie game that captures the magic of old fire emblem games. I enjoyed the music, mechanics, progression, and the story was pretty solid. If you enjoy grid-based tactical games then this is a must IMO. My time played is slightly inflated by leaving the game on during missions now and then, but I did 3 1/2 playthroughs. Beat the game on normal, then hard, then easy (just because lol), and now I'm about half way through my brutal play through. I think the difficulty scaling is very good, I would start on normal difficulty if you're unsure. I thought hard mode could've been a little more difficult but I'm assuming that's why brutal mode was added later. Only a few small notes about things that I thought could've been improved. One was the in-game conversations between characters when they fight. While this isn't super important to the game play itself, it seemed wrong to (avoiding spoilers) kil...

Love this game. My favorite character is Cedric. I have always enjoyed the fantasy of a powerful holy priest. I specced Cedric from healer, to Priest and then finally at 30 the mighty Saint! Cedric is a holy beacon of heals for my team, awesome....but I also really like Edward and Douglas. And Slyker turned into an absolute beast for me, I made Slyker a Lionheart. Abigail was also Amazing, I specced her as Ranger. Any turn based, tactics fan should give this game a try, it is really good, especially the combat. My only gripe is it is only 21 chapters long! Boooo! I am on chapter 18 and don't want to continue because I don't want the game to end. I really wish there was an expansion with more content and chapters. But overall a great team-based tactics game with fun to be had...great job for just a small team of developers...maybe even just one...but he really put his heart into the game and it shows. Thanks for making a great game, I am really enjoying it. Any chance for a chapt...

Well it felt like it lead up to a giant waste of time. I like the systems, and most of the characters. Even tho leveling and customizing felt restrictive at times I was enjoying the game. The character list grew to fast to learn anything about characters, or to level new ones up. Figured you must just have to pick a few characters and dump all your stuff into them. Pick up the other characters next play thu.... Last half of the story was dog water with a side dry turds tho. It brought with it let down after let down. Both from mechanics and story wise imo. End of the story hits you with the most awkward choice of "does it all suck like this or suck like that?". No good choice when the time matters, AND you lose a MC. No matter your choice you lose all the time, resources, and interest you put into one of the MCs. In my case I lost my second favorite character that had my cool weapons, and all my income tied up in them. The justification that was given came across as a "just beca...
