About This Game

Nine Sols is a lore rich, hand-drawn 2D action-platformer featuring Sekiro-inspired deflection focused combat. Embark on a journey of Asian fantasy, explore the land once home to an ancient alien race, and follow a vengeful hero’s quest to slay the 9 Sols, formidable rulers of this forsaken realm.

Story

In New Kunlun, hero Yi has awakened the 9 rulers of this forsaken realm. To defeat the 9 Sols in the deserted city.

“Becomes one with the way of Tao…”

New Kunlun, the Solarian’s last sanctuary, has remained quiet for centuries. Inside this vast realm, the ancient gods left mortals with a promised land that is forever protected by the sacred rituals, yet the truth of this world remains unknown to most. Everything changes when Yi, a long forgotten hero from the past, is awoken by a human child.

Follow Yi on his vengeful quest against the 9 Sols, formidable rulers of this forsaken realm, and obliterate any obstacles blocking your way in Sekiro-lite style combat. Explore in unique “Taopunk” setting that blends cyberpunk elements with Taoism and far eastern mythology. Unravel the mysteries of an ancient alien race and learn about the fate of mankind.

Features

2D Sekiro-lite Combat: Slash, deflect, charge into enemies and blow them up with the Taoist talisman! Each fight combines fast, brutal action sequences with classic platforming mechanics.

Intriguing Boss Fight: Ready yourself to fight the vicious ancient guardians and gruesome creatures. Be patient and utilize every move in your arsenal, mix up with Yi’s godly bow to defeat these larger than life figures.

Taopunk Setting: When cyberpunk clashes with Taoism, melding sci-fi elements with eastern mythology/fantasy, the experimental genre of Taopunk was born.

Exploration: Traverse in the interconnected regions of New Kunlun. Discover secrets, piece together the story behind Yi’s revenge.

Aids from inhabitants: Meet interesting NPCs of this world and interact with them to receive upgrades, gain new abilities, and discover useful technology.

Hand-drawn Environments/Animations and Manga: Nine Sols is filled with meticulous hand-crafted, anime style landscapes, sprite based hand-drawn animations, blending with Japanese manga inspired cutscenes.

If you like to parry a lot and time enemy attacks this game is for you. If you don't like that play style, then look for something different to play.

I genuinely think this is the best game I have ever played. It might just be the best video game ever, to be honest with you. The gameplay is a wonderful mix of intriguing combat (that only gets better with more upgrades), and movement that feels precise and fun. Being inspired by Sekiro I expected the movement to be great but this... is next level. This is genuinely the only game I played where dying felt like my fault, every attack is very well telegraphed and once you enter that flow state of "getting" a boss, it's hard to not feel like a gaming master when you beat a boss you've been stuck on for hours. This isn't even mentioning the story either. It blends traditional Chinese folklore perfectly with it's more modern, cyberpunk feeling to it. Yi's character arc is so satisfying, seeing him go from a no-regrets killing machine to a nuanced absurdist by the end of the game. I'd rant more about the story but, I really don't want to spoil the good bits that make everything work, so I...

The bosses are some of the best if not the best i have fought in any game, the combat is amazing and the story is good. Truly recommend this game if you like metroidvanias, the game was not very difficult, but challenging. Only really struggled with the final boss.

I'm a sucker for Metroidvanias, and nine sols is no exception. I loved the experience and adored the hand drawn characters and environments. I love the taopunk aesthetic, and the story is 100% amazing. I'll be honest, this is one of my favorite games now, and I hope anyone who tries gives it a good go, as it can be difficult at times. I know I got stuck on a few bosses for more attempts than i'd like, but the success of beating them was euphoric. 10/10 I recommend this.

Despite being labeled as Metroidvania, this game puts way bigger focus on combat, than on exploration. And for a reason - while i enjoyed exploration in Hollow Knight, it felt like combat part of Hollow Knight was flat and dull. And that's where Nine Sols didn't let me down - combat is the main focus of the game, but at cost of exploration element being kind of dull (but not by much). Game world and exploration - Game world is definitely much smaller than of one in Hollow Knight, and much more flat regarding how much secrets or backtrack possibilities it holds, but honestly, combat makes up for it. Platformer part isn't drawing inspiration from one particular game, but from a lot of different games, and this is welcome, because it feels unique. And game isn't exactly giving you places where you must show platforming skills, aside from one soulscape, and some parts of Empyrean Distinct. Art style - it is very lovely. I love games which come after cartoony/unique artstyle (and not chas...

Gameplay, art and music fantastic. Literally spent 11 hours on the final boss. The plot and characters are really what sells this for me though. Turns from revenge quest to contemplation of the meaning of life and a man (cat?) coming to terms with the mistakes he's made. Fun and thoughtful!

What makes a game great? Fun gameplay, interesting story, intriguing characters, immersive soundtrack, and more. There are few games that have managed to achieve the best out of many categories, and Nine Sols is one of them. Of course, my opinion will differ from everyone else. You might like something more than I do. I personally do not enjoy difficult games and platformers as much as others. Yet somehow Nine Sols has become one of, if not my favourite game of all time! I went in expecting a painful experience, with the art style being the only redeeming quality. And now I feel empty, that kind of empty you feel after finishing something great. I want more, I miss my time playing this game. And it was painful at times, but it didn't matter because everything else was so amazing. So whatever your opinion may be on a game and it's genre, you should still give it a chance (you can always refund), and the same goes for Nine Sols. Believe me, if I love it, and many more, you will t...
