About This Game

Void Grimm

Void Grimm is a really unique indie game: A real-time roguelike deckbuilder in space! Command your ship and defeat your foes in furious space battle by playing powerful cards.

Challenge yourself with the fast-paced action and enjoy the rush of adrenaline - or use the active pause system to give yourself a break, if you want more time for strategic planning during the fights.

Setting

You are the commander of a powerful spaceship that can hold the most destructive weapons and advanced battle systems. In the beginning the armament is quite basic, but as you progress you will find more cards to upgrade your arsenal and recruit crew members that will further improve your combat capabilities.

The vast power at your command is bitterly needed as you will encounter deadly waves of enemies. If they manage to break your shield and destroy your armor the run is over.

Even if you are defeated, each run provides you with research points that you can use to unlock more features for future runs.

You can choose from three different ships (with two loadouts each), six heroes, various perks and multiple difficulty levels. These options as well as many interesting cards provide a lot of fun, interesting and challenging runs.

Gameplay

Your arsenal of weapons and battle systems is represented by a deck of cards. The cards in your hand can be played again and again, when their cooldown is finished, until they run out of ammo and need to be discarded, which reloads them. When you've discarded a card you automatically draw a new one.

You can discard to get rid off unwanted cards and draw into something that you need.

Choosing to play or discard your cards is an important part of the strategy. Some cards have strong synergies and when played after another will maximize your damage, but depending on the state of battle you might want to throw away promising combinations to draw quickly into skills that recharge your shield and avoid your destruction.

Deckbuilding

After each battle and in various events you are given the chance to pick from a collection of cards to enhance your deck.

In markets on space station you can remove cards to streamline your deck.

It's up to you to find a good balance between optimization and versatility.

Removing a card costs money and you need to choose wisely as there are various other ways to spend it.

Officers and Ship Upgrades

On your journey through space, you can recruit officers, who will improve your ship's capabilities and aid you in combat.

They are quite powerful, but you can only have six active officers at the same time. A smart team composition is key for your success.

Some will help you directly by increasing your damage output or boost your defenses, others provide long-term benefits like repairs between battles, higher money rewards or discounts at shops, where you can upgrade your ship even further or delete cards to optimize your deck.

Combat Strategies

No deck is perfect to solve all problems. You have to adapt to the different waves of enemies. Some are heavily armored, others do high damage or support their allies by boosting their combat capabilities or healing them. Lastly there are the money carriers, which give you a cool money reward, if you manage to destroy them quickly enough. Prioritizing enemies is important.

You can overcome high armor with strong attacks or reduce armor with "armor breaker" skills. When you "mark" enemies, each one of your attacks against them will be increased, turning your multi-hit skills into devastating attacks.

Replayability

Like other roguelikes Void Grimm is intended to be played multiple times. Each run is different as you draw different cards as rewards and encounter different officers.

A good commander adapts his strategy based on the tools at hand and the circumstances he encounters.

Various difficulty settings allow you to play the game at your own pace, from the relaxed "easy" to the very challenging "insane".

Before a run you can select your ship and hero as well as "perks" that change your performance in various ways. (Many items require research, which is the meta progression of this game.)

In a run you can choose your path on the map. Do you want to fight regular enemies that give card rewards or the tricky champions that drop powerful artifacts? Will you go into the dungeons to fight for loot? Or the random encounters?

Thanks to many significant choices you can shape your run immensely. A lot of fun and rewarding replayability.

Early Access

The game is in Early Access and more features will be added over time.

Since The Foundation Update most of the major game mechanics are included in Void Grimm: Map modes, various bosses, different heroes, upgrade items, meta progression and many more.

Game is way too short and easy. You can clear all difficulties in less than 1h.

Void Grimm truly is the very definition of early access: It clearly advertises all the parts of itself that are broken or in progress each time you complete a runthrough. So why am I recommending it? Because I keep on doing runthroughts. The real-time nature of the card battle adds a unique (aka stressful) twist to the deckbuilt roguelite genre that is refreshing. I'm definitely holding on to this one and planning on dipping in and out over the years as this little gem receives updates!

The starship combat adventure game Void Grimm released a demo many moons ago as a test bed for its unique real-time card-based combat system. It was different - a curious peek at a more frenzied rather than relaxed Slay The Spire sci-fi contest. Had potential. The developer has now released a massive update that in Early Access adds a host of aspects and features - listed in the update - that make Void Grimm a fine companion to the anticipated Breachway, so far the standard to meet in this ship genre. You will eventually (!) choose a captain (there are multiples) to provide certain ability cards for your deck. Following is choice of ship (there are multiples) that provide you with peculiar card decks to start with. Heroes can be collected (there are multiples) that form a pool from whence you assign to your ship, each providing noticeable bonuses to ship traits. As with Slay The Spire'a'likes, you can collect equipment, Heroes, and weapon cards as you advance along mission trees. Fact...

I love the mix of strategy and action in Void Grimm. There is an active pause system that allows you to play the weapons and queue commands, which keeps the game fun, even when there are multiple enemies with various strengths and weaknesses. The meta progression offers a lot of interesting rewards to unlock new playstyles.

Void Grimm is a fast and unforgiving game that wants to challenge you with multiple decisions per second while the dramatic music keeps you engaged. An emotional and physical rollercoaster.

It has potential. I would like to give a recommendation but I just can't right now. The tutorial is very lacking, I encountered mechanics in game that I was totally clueless about after doing the tutorial. I k now it is in development and I am sure this will change, but I am just commenting on what it is NOW and what it is currently like to play. Maybe after some more time I will retry it and see how it is coming along. Like I said, it has potential, a lot of it actually, if it is executed well.

CURRENT REVIEW AS OF 8/17/2024 A LOT HAS CHANGED. 1. Original comment of adding ships and RNG runs has been implemented or at least is part of an end goal! Shows unlockable content and content set for future plans and that has a bit of hope for me to see more to come! 2. Added more modifiers which does at more changes to runs! 3. Seems to be a story at this point and a system dedicated to factions but I haven't played enough to fully unlock them. Seems the game is gearing more towards longterm replayability and faction building per-run. 4. Lasers got a buff...Previously they were hotdog water and while they are 1-turn-and-burn they do a fair bit of respectable damage! 5. Upon my original review in 2022 they did not impliment a way to autofire the cards with low damage but super short cooldown.....Wish they did because if you have two then you have to move to two sides of your hand back and forth to spam them whereas in other cards you just burn, wait, refresh, or reload them. 6....
