Like the first book, I would've refunded this one if I hadn't missed the 14 day refund window. I'm honestly just pushing through the series because I already paid for it, not because I'm enjoying it. The writing hasn't improved much (though credit where it's due: the grating, constant repetitions of "thank you very much!" from the first book are mercifully gone), and the friendships with companions feel shallow and unearned. We're repeatedly told the characters are like family, but it's just presented as given without really building to it. The companions are generically good people who care about each other because the script says so, not because of any real chemistry, meaningful conflict, or genuine development. This "tell don't show" problem permeates everything, especially the plot. The writing insists the journey is hard and dangerous, that the characters have grown through hardship, but they never actually work for anything. Whenever there's a problem, someone conveniently shows...
