I played 8 hrs and that's enough for me. The devs tried combining Slay the Spire with Frostpunk aesthetic and then on top of that added a couple more layers of game mechanics in the form of multiple unis, the lantern, cardplay for city storyline and unit management, as well as way too many unneccesarily (slightly) different flavours of unit status and enemy attack intentions. And for all their I'm sure well intentioned and obviously huge efforts in combining all of this, it all just didn't gel into the strategy I wanted it to be. The elements just step on each others toes and the magic of simply understood brain-engaging strategy wasn't there. Just like what others have said, they did great with the art (not so much with the music) if you like the epic city under seige feel. And like I said, they put a lot of work into this and it was a good attempt to fuse all of this together, but sometimes over-complicating things can make good gameplay elements not work. Near the end of my first ...

About This Game
As We Descend is a strategy roguelike deckbuilder set in an apocalyptic world with dual-layered deckbuilding: you must play your cards right in both dangerous expeditions and the last city of humankind.

Recruit new squads of units by utilizing scavenged technology. Each squad is a unique archetype with its own set of cards which can be added, removed, and upgraded. Deploy the right composition of forces in order to tailor your deck for success against each battle encounter.
The city is the last bastion of humanity and serves as your main base. Familiarize yourself with its denizens so you can survive its feudal politics and gain allies. Roll the dice to compel those in the city to your cause. Make the most of your limited time and resources so you can prepare sufficiently for the future.
Against titanic enemies, you must rely on not just strength but wit. Adapt your tactics by reacting to enemy intents. Master the combat zone system: reposition your forces between the Guard Zone and the Support Zone in order to dodge enemy attacks and set up a defensive line.
Each descent contains countless challenges, including surviving the post-apocalypse. Scavenge the resources you need to defend and upgrade as you attempt to break through the three biomes to enter the core. Rewards and mysteries both await you beneath the surface. Even if you fail, you will uncover new secrets and begin the next journey with new knowledge and tools to delve ever deeper.
Hailing from one of the three great factions of the City-Vault, you hold the key to its fate amidst the post-apocalypse. Outmaneuver the medieval politics of the city and unearth its deepest secrets. As the first and last line of defense for the city walls, you must hold the line...

Felt real slow at first but after a few runs I am having a blast. Beautiful presentation.
I was looking for a game to play every so often while working from home, and this is perfect!! /it truly is a nice mix between Slay the Spire and Frostpunk; absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a good card based rogue like with a fun story and graphics.
Cool game.
This is by far my favorite deckbuilder since Slay the Spire. The gameplay as well as the music and theme of the game are all on point. I love the game as it is, I can't wait to see what the finished product is going to look like!
What persuaded me to buy this game initially was the art. Very close to the Trench Crusade diesel punk style which I honestly think is an underutilized theme in games. Now, after playing a run I am very glad I picked it up. Not only is the style pretty slick and worth some praise on its own, the game play and mechanics are super fun. I wouldn't call any of the mechanics it's using fully unique but it does mash up familiar tropes from other Roguelike deckbuilders in it's own kind of way to make a fusion the is different enough to make it exciting. If you are like me and you sitting on the fence because you think the art looks cool, give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. The only thing I will say is that the runs tend to be quite long. So if you are expecting a quick, 10 minute adventure, I would say this isn't it.
The game is incredibly fun and can be fairly challenging at times. I was hesitant about the "city management" part at first, but as you learn what locations do (you literally have it marked on the map after interacting with them), it adds a layer of strategic depth because you have to carefully manage your resources (money, favor, healing items, etc.) outside of combat as well. The combat is amazing, and the lantern itself offers additional strategic options, on top of the units. The units themselves are amazing, they all have their distinct roles, but you can build each unit (and consequently your deck) differently, based on the perks, cards you draft, and cards you choose to upgrade. Overall, pretty happy with the game, and would recommend to people who like deckbuilders (and even people who never played deckbuilders before but like turn-based games). Excited to see what the 3rd faction looks like and for more content to come to the game in the future!
The art style and gameplay are enough to make it worth the pricetag. It's almost like a more artistic and diverse version of Slay the Spire and there's enough diversity in the enemies, allies, and events that doesn't feel like pure RNG to make each run feel unique. My only critical comment would be that I wish the game had more vertical content. There are a lot of options and modifiers to change each run, but it's fairly short once you get the hang of it. It would be nice if there was a "just one more turn" where you could keep going after beating the final boss. I am hoping that in future updates we get more content to add more depth to each run. Either way, great game, super unique, worth the money. If you liked Slay the Spire and card-based roguelites are you thing then you are going to love this game too.
Honeslty I like the game. It almost goes into that feeling of having a army. I honestly would like to see multiple troops in teams instead of like 3 or 2 to kind of tap into that power army dynamic feel. Maybe I haven't played too far in the game to see but having each troop have their own health bar would be interesting too to add the feeling more. Ill keep looking forward towards more in the game and wait till its got more content!
Great strategy roguelite deckbuilder game and loads of fun! It presents some really interesting ideas and has a lot of gameplay depth. If you enjoy Monster Train, Star Vaders, Slay the Spire or any game like those, you'll enjoy this. However, As We Descend suffers from a few missing quality of life features and poor tutorialization that can turn off some people. I got around it by making a ton of mistakes from misunderstanding how things worked, but not everyone has the patience to work through that. Feedback that I have for the devs:

Build a longer, more interactive tutorial system that introduces the game mechanics one small step at a time through player actions, rather than constant bombardment of lengthy blocks of text.
Add the ability to mouse-over/analyze individual keywords of a card (other deckbuilder games do this). There's too much text spam when I'm trying to understand a card and what it does and I have to constantly filter out information that I alr...
