Developer's Voice:

Hello!

This is rdein, creator of the Momodora series. Recently my team and I have announced the latest installment in the series, “Moonlit Farewell”. This is a concluding story, following through from the events of Momodora 3. With this new tale, I also intend to close the book on many of the past games’ mysteries and questions.

I’m aware that many players are more familiar with the story of Kaho, which is set in a distant past. As such, I’m designing “Moonlit Farewell” to be as enjoyable as possible without prior knowledge of Momodora 1 to 3’s stories. Moreover, the series has always been focused on action and minimal stories. So please, don’t worry too much about “catching up”!
Lastly, we hope to bring you our best game with this new title, using all the knowledge we’ve learned in the past 10 years. Please look forward to it!

I am a big fan of the previous Momodora game (Reverie) and was thrilled to know that it got a new installment (Farewell). My review is therefore biased to liking it although I do have some harsh things to say. I also bicker and complain a lot about games that I like.
Impressions
[olist] [*]First of all, this here is what I would like to call a methodical Metroidvania. What I mean is that this game will not try to be unique and offers a solid run-of-the-mill metroidvania-experience with all mechanics and features that you would expect out of a game of that genre. This also means that progression, be it motivated by the game's plot or unlocked abilities, is fairly straightforward and predictable. [*]Once you have unlocked all movement options, running and traversing through the map tiles feel like a breeze and it's also quite exciting. As a matter of fact, platforming is a much bigger focus in this entry as it offers unlimited wall dashes that even resets your double j...
Story: 8

Gameplay: 9

Overall: 8.5/10
The storytelling is improved over Reverie Under the Moonlight's very minimalistic style, but the movement does not feel as tight and the map progression is heavily streamlined.

Fun but a bit short metroidvania with a fantastic pixel art style and charming vibe and music. It feels a lot easier than the previous game and I don't think you can play the harder difficulty until you complete the game once which might annoy some people. 8.5/10

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is the Fifth and Final game in the Momodora series created by Rdein and man what a send off. Combines the best aspects of the previous games and expands upon them. The story is just as bleak as the last Momodora game, but a little bit hopeful in the end; don't let the cutesy art fool you, this game is dark. Honestly, its a great Metroidvania game and a worthy entry into the genre. Though if i have to complain about something, its the length of the game and some of the powers you get makes the rest of the game pretty easy and there was little to no buildup to the final boss. But it shouldn't take away from the enjoyment.

A lot easier than the previous title Reverie Under the Moonlight, this game saves most of its challenge for the post game where it decides to give you optional bosses who require you to jump and dodge a bit more. The base game will give you a decent challenge here or there if you're experienced, but this game chooses to be very new player friendly if you've never played a Metroidvania-style game before. Some combinations of the sigils (items that give you additional abilities to your attacks, heals, etc.) are absolutely busted and kind of make the game a breeze. Overall I had a lot of fun, and it's definitely worth the price point as it is, but if you're worried about only having a 10 hour experience then wait for a sale.
