About the Game

A gripping prison escape RPG woven with crime, corruption, and hidden agendas. Step into a maximum-security facility where every inmate has a past—and a plan. You'll have to fight to survive, investigate, and ultimately break free before the time runs out.

Uncover a scheme that threatens more than just your life—it could bring down the entire city. In this thrilling adventure, choices matter, and escape is your only salvation!

Choose between two protagonists — Thomas, a reporter caught in a web of lies, or Bob, an undercover agent sent deep into the prison system. Each storyline delivers over 20 hours of engrossing mystery, where your every choice matters. Navigate a prison ruled by three powerful gangs, interact with 47 uniquely crafted inmates, and uncover layers of intrigue through dozens of memorable NPCs.

With over 100 handcrafted quests, multiple escape routes—each with its own risks and rewards—several possible endings, and more than 500,000 words of gripping narrative, Back to the Dawn delivers a deeply replayable RPG unlike anything you've experienced.

Thomas the Fox is a journalist caught up in a dark conspiracy and who got thrown into a maximum-security prison for not playing ball. Working with your attorney friend on the outside, you must collect evidence to save yourself and the city from grave danger!

Bob the Panther is an undercover agent who has never failed on any of his missions, but he is growing exhausted of this line of work and wants out. But a personal tragedy drags him back for one last job in prison. Experience a hardboiled tale of betrayal, vengeance, and truth!

This is an enormous prison with lots to do and many places to explore, but make sure you follow the rules, or at least try not to get caught!

You’ll encounter all kinds of challenges as you explore your new environment. But will you be a model prisoner and just try to keep your head down, or will you leave a trail of chaos and destruction in your wake? It’s all up to you.

Meet a colorful cast of inmates in your prison, each with an interesting story to tell. You can either make them your friends or fight, bully and rob them into submission. Will you be part of a gang or a cunning lone wolf? Pick a side!

Are you a tough guy who lets his fists do the talking, a thief who hides in the shadows, or perhaps a smooth talker who manipulates the scene? Develop your skills, craft tools to suit your style, and climb your way from “new fish” to “top dog.”

In a place built to break you, your sharpest weapon is your creativity and cunning. Every inch of Boulderton Prison might hold the key to your escape, from your prison cell to the infirmary, to the sewers and even the rooftops. Can you break free?

Incredibly engrossing. This is resource management at its finest, wrapped in an intricate stat-driven RPG and a lovingly crafted pixel art aesthetic. Think (plot focused) The Escapists meets (light) Disco Elysium meets Blacksad. The strength of the game is its cleverness in refreshing constant short, mid and long term goals, through the use of time-limited exploration areas. Each zone of the prison is accessible during a set part of the day, meaning you'll need to plan in advance *what* to do, *when* and *where*, depending on your available resources (mainly stamina, focus, money and items along a few others secondary ones such as satiety/digestion). The game is a constant juggle of inventory management (what gifts to carry to get rapport with fellow inmates to unlock their skills?), quest imperatives (what to do, how long will it take, how much energy do you need for your objectives?) and exploration, both character and location driven (what do people want, how do you get it...

I originally expected something like The Escapists but with bit more storyline, but nah this game is an actual rpg with branching story moments, funny op builds you can build and good story and characters :D Inmates have good mix of tragedy, bad life choices and genuinely heroic/uplifting stories to them. Really love the game and looking forward for release of the third campaign. Feedback wise, have to say that game does feel very authentic to 90s-2000s american cop/crime dramas. Gave me bit of nostalgia xD But sometimes its bit too authentic, Bob's campaign was silly moment where he infiltrates the psychiatric ward in very hokey scene where he observes the patients who were from ward to learn how to pretend to be "insane" and I wasn't impressed with portrayal of diagnosing and mental health professionals either. Other funny tropey thing was how game follows the american cartoon logic where male humanized animals have varied body types matching animals while most female characters hav...

This game is awesome. I had my eye on this for a while since it was shown in a next-fest, but it released early access and I wanted to wait for 1.0 before diving into any sort of story game. It was worth waiting for. Fundamentally, the game can be divided into two main parts: Surviving your day-to-day prison life, and progressing your character's stories (as well as additional plotlines that you might start to see unravel inside the prison). and of course, these are connected as getting to new areas will require skills or connections, and there are often multiple ways to solve an objective. The prison simulator aspect is actually quite fun; there is a lot of choice in how you can develope you character. Want to be prison boss who solves things with fist? You can, and join the boxing club for some cash. Want to be a goody-two shoes and work with the guards to live a more comfortable life? you can. Rather use a silver tongue to make friends with everyone, bluff through card bets, and ...

Only played for 4 hours so far and absolutely loving it. Can already tell there’s so much replayability. You have so soooooo many options. Fight people in turn-based battles, befriend people, join or not join 3 different gangs….plus you have so soooooo many many other things. Perks to unlock, relationships to build with people on the outside of jail to get them to mail you packages… Way more other things. Idk how many playthroughs it would take to feel like you’ve 100%’ed it.

This game is great. It's made with care and shows a level of brilliant pixel art combined with fun mini-games and good characters. Both main character storylines are great, with my preference actually being on their new character: Bob. His storyline felt more intense and immersive for me. In the end, this game held my attention for around a good 60 hours. If you do fail to complete the game in the initial deadline, you can repeat the playthrough with your skills, and relationships carried over. While this might deter some, I would strongly recommend this game. I have played tons of indie games, but this one really shines and deserves more love because you can feel the care and thought the developers have put in to allow the game to feel immersive and to have options. I highly recommend this one if you think you'd enjoy it. It may not be for you, but for me this has been one of my favorites and reminds me oddly enough of the Talltale Walking Dead Games that I love where I can make choi...
