Amazing remake of an interesting game. Wanted to play it but never did when it originally came out. Now that I am, I am very happy with this version of the game. It is a remake of an old game which means there are some... quirks. Like how shooting over objects is... problematic. I am really enjoying this. I am glad what they did with it.
Took me around 5 hours to finish the game though I spent quite some time getting lost and wandering around. I love the premise with the Egyptian magic artifact and the FMV 'cutscenes' in the style of 7th guest. The weapons felt good to use (shotgun is satisfying though I wish the tommy gun is full-auto instead of burst fire only). The enemies in this game are a big highlight, most of them are unique, fun to fight and have cool attack animations like maids that punch you with huge fists and clowns that trap you with their hands when they get close. The game world is surprisingly massive with many different areas to explore with its own nooks and crannies. It was honestly kind of overwhelming at first but once you spend a couple of hours exploring you start to get familiar with them. However, some of them have pretty confusing layouts, like
Wine Cellar
which was a pain for me to navigate. Also, I feel like the
Set / Duncan Boss respawns way too quickly,...
It’s a remarkable boom shoot, despite the cruft of its design. Remarkable, first for its eye-catching digitized sprites. These are some of the cleanest, smoothest digitized sprites I’ve seen in a game and it gives it quite the distinctive look for an old timey fps. I think the level design is also pretty remarkable too, just one large island to wander around in, no load screens, no direction markers. This is also a flaw, with a ton of wandering and backtracking happening until you get a sense of the place, but it’s definitely awe-inspiring to just keep going and going. It sprawls. The enemies are varied, though their behavior not quite so. The typical scenario is to wander into some new area, clear out the dozens upon dozens of enemies, and then scope out the map. Thankfully, the environs and variety of enemies keep things engaging even as you backtrack and blast over and over. The final thing I find remarkable is how they conveyed the story. Instead of cutscenes, you wander upon...
Is time kill-able ? Everything is neat ! the soundtracks, the gunplay, the levels design and the atmosphere is peak !
This was on my GOG wishlist but I never bought it fearing it had ugly control schemes like Shogo or MDK, but a miracle happened and Nightdive did the remaster. This game is very interesting is made from interconnected maps where you need to do some backtracking for keys and special items. It was confusing at first but it gets easier after the third key, very tricky since you need to find every hidden switch and room if playing blind. The enemies are ok at first but I recommend to clear them all when possible since they keep wandering and can ambush you. The end was kind of frustrating since there's a new enemy very powerful that respawns and you are more likely to ignore but also you'll need to find certain doors to progress and this game sucks at evading enemies because the maps are full of clutter. I advice you take screenshots of every door and their locations because is easy to get lost. In conclusion it's a good boomer shooter from the 90s and if you are interested and do...
Years ago, I bought the original game (which is criminally underrated but equally overlooked): it was fun to play ! Now, Nightdive truly did a fantastic remaster: the overall result is much better and also more enjoyable !
Barely any playtime but I liked it. I just got stuck. I wish more games did that classic fps horror kinda stuff like this one. Good OST too!
Bugged and final is straight up annoying. Invincible character chasing you and then boss with too much hp (i run out of ammo, it dies when you make cheat code for ammo). I enjoyed this game at first but overall leaves me with a sense of annoyence. Skip it.
I remember always seeing this on PS1 as a kid but never got a chance to actually play it. Man, this game is a fever dream lmao. But it's one of the best classic FPS I've experienced in a min so far! It's honestly an underrated gem.
