I’ve now given this game not one, but two chances. That’s right—I willingly went back for seconds, thinking maybe I’d missed something, maybe the first run just didn’t click. Spoiler: it wasn’t me, it was the game. Twice bitten, twice disappointed. On paper, Of Life and Land should be exactly the kind of colony-sim I’d sink into. The premise is appealing: managing multiple settlements in a chain-of-life ecosystem where everything is interconnected. In theory, that means carefully balancing production, food, and growth across maps in a grand survival ballet. In practice, it feels more like trying to herd drunk villagers who’ve never seen wheat before. Case in point: my farmers refused to harvest fully grown crops, even though I had plenty of storage waiting for it. Wheat fields standing tall and golden, begging to be collected, and my villagers stared at them like they were some kind of avant-garde art installation. Meanwhile, those same villagers eat like bottomless p...

About This Game
Take the role of a leader delegated to build new settlements in remote, unknown corners of the empire. In those forgotten places, nature is wild and legends are more real and vivid than one may think. Experience the challenges of different seasons and climates in a world, where every animal and every plant tries to find their place in nature, while you lead your villagers. How much will you share with nature? Will you strive for balance or even enforce the extinction of certain animals? Follow the old paths… or find your own.
Find Balance (Or Not)
Humans share the same space and resources with nature, and they influence each other. While in the beginning the influence of the humans is insignificant, it gets more and more important when the city - and its needs - grow. There is a risk that some animals or groups will become extinct or explosively multiply, depending on your actions.
Build Your Economy
Manage the acquisition, refinement, and distribution of resources. Goods must be transported to desired locations by someone who has the time and space to do it.
Care For All Living Things
Manage the needs of the citizens. They are “alive” and have a specific home, workplace, and broad range of needs and goals. But animals also look for food, get thirsty, sleepy, form groups, look for social interactions, and try to find their place in nature. Even plants need water and the right temperature in order to survive.
Observe The Vibrant World
Seasons and weather affect the gameplay. Certain plants grow only in certain seasons, need more water on hot days or freeze during cold periods. Humans and animals need more energy to keep warm in winter or more water in summer to keep cool. In extreme cases, they suffer from exhaustion and may even be harmed.
Take Your Time
You set the pace. Pause the game, speed it up or slow it down whenever you want. Nature is robust, and your villagers develop more complex needs as you progress.
Build Your Own Scenarios
Create your own maps and scenarios in the editor. You can change the landscape, generate plants, and place animals. You can also connect watercourses and create new paths for travellers. Add new maps or link existing ones together to a new world.

This game is a lot like Banished the game. It's a city settlement set in a medieval Europe like setting. I do like that workers are automatically assigned to jobs, makes it easier than the micro management in Banished which almost caused me to rip out hair. It is a fun game. You build a settlement, build larger homes, let families have kids so the kids grow up to replace them, fight starvation, illness, and the cold.
It's an ok game, but I personally prefer Foundation. There are very little animations here, for example, I set up a fishing spot and the villager simply walks to that spot, waves its arms a bit then walks off. At least in Foundation you see the little villager go off in his boat and fish in the lake. I just find that kind of detail more immersive. Of Life and Land is a good game, but for me, the art style gets very cluttered. There just seems too much going on and my eyes go a bit funny, but thats more on me and not the developers fault, but there is a lot happening at once. I am not going to give the game a negative review because I am still giving it time. But so far, it has got a bit repetitive. It does look delightful, and I am hopeful they will do more with it in time. It is a very good city builder and managment sim. Well done to the team so far, you have a lovely game, but my only critiscm is mainly due to my eyes lol.
