About the Game

A great deity created the world named Engardin, leaving four goliaths before her departure. The Goliaths abided by their different divine callings and upheld the order and flow of this world. Hence, the lives in Engardin reincarnated and multiplied.
Humans were the last creation, and their ever-expanding ambitions led to a protracted war against the Goliaths. Engardin was engulfed in flames, until a huge explosion known as "The Razing" devastated the Holy Grounds of mankind and brought a swift end to the conflict. But the divine order was broken, and lives withered away. The age of mankind came to an end.
The survivors of the conflict scattered across Engardin. Severed from the Well of Mankind and unable to reincarnate, they banded together to form settlements. Years have passed since this great cataclysm, and the remaining human settlements have been suddenly assaulted by mystic forces. Renee, a young amnesiac girl and student of Aros, was the lone survivor of the attack on her village. Determined to recover her forgotten memories and locate her lost mentor, she bids farewell to her destroyed village to embark on a journey that will inexplicably set into motion a series of events that will determine the fate of this new world.

Afterimage is an amazing experience for the Metroidvania lover. I'm just shy of 100% completion and have put well over 40 hours into the search thus far. This game is a great way to immerse yourself in an interesting world full of beauty and mystery and it boasts a massive roster of varied and interesting boss fights to engage with along the way. While at times it might seem as though it could be "too big" as you're uncovering new areas several hours in, it never seems to outstay its welcome nor does it lead to exploration or back-track fatigue that some other longer MVs might have subjected you to in the past. The world is genuinely engaging to get lost in, and the combat and movement are smooth and great fun. Do note that there is very little hand-holding and you can proceed very non-linearly through this game, which can seem a bit puzzling at times. For me, though, this is a huge plus. I love when a game lets you just do your thing. You owe it to yourself to give this ...
nice gaphic, nice VA, nice music, but map is so boring
Super fun game with an enormous world map (at least compared to similar ones of the genre), excellent visuals and music and satisfying combat mechanics, especially since there are multiple different weapon types to try out and learn. It takes a while for the game to pick up given the size of the world and amount of stuff to do. Boss fights are fun and satisfying to learn and the movement tech is crisp and enjoyable. Game can be fairly easy or quite hard depending on what level you are in certain areas, but it's certainly possible to be over-leveled and curb-stomp bosses. I think I beat over 50% of the bosses on my first try, since I like to explore and was relatively higher level than expected in many places. But on the flip side, I faced a lot of bosses when I was quite underleveled and those took several attempts. Overall, excellent game -- highly recommend playing this if you are a fan of the MV genre.
Afterimage completely won me over. Out of all the metroidvanias I’ve played, this one (together with Bloodstained) stands as my absolute favorite. What I love the most is the true sense of adventure and progression it delivers — every new skill unlocked not only feels rewarding, but also makes me want to go back and revisit older areas with fresh eyes and new possibilities. That loop of discovery and growth is simply addictive. Another big plus: it’s very newbie-friendly for anyone who’s not a veteran of the genre. The learning curve feels fair, and the game invites you to explore and enjoy at your own pace. If you love metroidvanias — or if you’re curious to try your first one — I can’t recommend Afterimage enough. A beautiful, challenging and rewarding journey that left me smiling all the way through.
This is probably my favourite metroidvania game after Hollow Knight. I keep coming back to it and have done 4 full play throughs so far. Apparently I've played it for 217 hours. I must have left it open by accident a few times. I hope... I think those numbers speak for themselves.
Fun Metroidvania with really big world, interesting skills and fun boss fights. The gameplay is smooth and I did not encounter any bugs. Only thing I regret playing on normal, the only challenge were bosses that were much higher level than me and after finding hp leeching trinket you pretty much can not die. I've beat true ending boss without dodging at all.
Fantastic game, slick controls and fun. Bosses could've been harder TBH. Castlevania SOTN vibes.
Great game, it really is. If you like metroidvanias, you would likely enjoy this game. That being said if you are used to difficulty in other games in this genre, do not play this game on normal. I haven't beaten the game yet, I am guessing I am at about a third of the way through, and I want to start over and play on advanced. This is one of the main complaints I see with this game, the difficulty apparently picks up midway or so though. Don't let this review turn you away though, there is variety in weaponry, and a skill tree to put points in, with the ability to find respec potions so you can experiment a bit. I enjoy the games environment, art style, and exploration aspects. It is a big game too, so if you want a metroidvania that has a lot to explore this is a great option.
I recommend this game for anyone looking for a game with fun combat, beautiful art and a good soundtrack. Everything else falls flat. I did have a fun time with it but was frustrated toward mid to late game. Just want to highlight some of my gripes below in case anyone else would be bothered by these and is what prevented my from wanting to unlock everything, get all endings, etc after getting the first ending. * The story is confusing and mostly non-existent . I'm not even sure what the main quest was about. * The map seems needlessly big. Tons of back tracking and blocked paths. * It's hard to know where to go next. I don't mind this somewhat but at least point me to the abilities that is preventing further exploration. * It lacks polish. For instance I would get the 'tutorial' message for a handful of things while in the mid game since the game doesn't force you to do even the basic things. There's also multiple unlocks in an ability node that can be blocked by your level. It nev...
