When I first saw the trailer for Best Month Ever! It reminded me of two well-known films with a certain resemblance: The Help and Green Book, well that was my immediate association and yeah, it’s somewhat similar. Almost everything we see in the game is a collection of old memories from our narrator, eight-year-old Mitch at the time, who recounts a road trip he took with his mother Louise years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1963. Still, the story touches on racism, abuse and life crises, and almost each decision influences Mitch’s personality and the outcome of the story. Although the game starts off promising, both the narrative and gameplay begin to stumble significantly as it progresses. Genuinely strong or memorable moments are rare. This game is pretty sweet and fun. However, I finished it in less than four hours, so I would certainly buy it while it's on sale. My only gripe is that the confidence meter seems broken. While being polite and honest, Mitch's confidence goes down. I still got a good ending, though, so it's not as broken as it could be.
Boy, this was a hard game to get through. While I did like the themes that were shown, the game fell short in many categories. The mechanics were so hard to control, the dialogue was god-awful and made me want to smash my head into a wall, the voice acting was some of the worst I have ever heard in a game, and the characters were just plain unlikable. This game had me sighing and cringing the whole time.
