It's really mid. Too many fireball and lava evasion setpieces, too few enemy types. Instead of challenging, the game grows just annoying. Special regards to the homing snake staff, where the snakes keep targeting walls instead of enemies directly in front of them. Build Powerslave was better.

Stopped before finishing. Plays pretty well for an older game and was mostly enjoying it. It plays a bit like Hexen and Hedon Bloodrite but with a level select screen. You backtrack to previous levels as you find new upgrades. This sort of level-based metroidvania is sometimes referred to as a crest-like (which comes from the game Demon's Crest). Backtracking is kind of annoying after getting a new power if you don't just use a guide to tell you which level to revisit because you're relying solely on your memory (you could take notes, though). I prefer Hedon Bloodrite and the Hexen games, but this weird little niche that these games occupy has never been a favourite of mine. When playing these games it just makes me wish I was either playing a straight up FPS or even better, a first-person action RPG in the vein of Lands of Lore 3, which does a lot of the same things but has more depth and makes it more interesting with the inventory, ge...

quicksaving would have made me so much more excited about finishing this game, even if it was just an optional setting. as a pre-reply to idiots: quicksave/manual saving does not lessen or subvert challenge, it lessens and subverts having to replay parts of the game that Aren't the challenge you're currently working on. also, to quote an id developer, "you choose what buttons you press."

It's fun to walk like an Egyptian in this game, even if there are difficulty spikes.

The world needs more metroidvania boomer shooters

Powerslave Exhumed joins the ranks of yet another excellent Nightdive remaster. This game is massively underappreciated in boomer shooter circles and it deserves its flowers. Uniquely, Powerslave Exhumed combines metroidvania elements with the boomer shooter formula and for the most part, it works very well! Especially considering that this game originally came out in mid 90's. Once you get used to a little bit of backtracking and how this game's level design works in general, everything clicks and flows nicely. Gameplay is fast. Gun feel is punchy and distinct (especially the GOATED M60), and the platforming is responsive and precise. If you dislike platforming in a FPS or in general, I don't think its a massive turnoff. I personally really love the visual design of all the enemies, and they each have their own impact on gameplay that keep things from becoming mindless. Different enemies require different weapons/strategies to take them down. This game oozes atmosphere and tone. Th...
