Good psychological horror game that has an interesting story.
Terrible. It's like the first game was developed by people who wanted to make a difficult but rewarding atmosphere heavy horror game and the second was made by COD FPSbros who tried to cram as many horror cliches into the game as possible.
F.E.A.R 2 manages to compete with its contemporaries but it's far from must play. While improvement in most areas over it's predecessor, in the most important - gameplay it's a step back.
Gameplay
While signature bullet time mechanic carries over from the first game other parts of the gameplay have been changed significantly. Gone is leaning or stealth and enemies feel more like stereotypical goons that what they were in og F.E.A.R. Grenades they throw are rarely timed, often giving you significant time to dodge and level design doesn't allow AI to shine much in terms of flanking maneuvers and so on - hard to get flanked on a straight corridor. Thus while aggressive approach is still deadly (to the player) but one doesn't have to be as careful as in first entry. I would say the whole game is at least a whole difficulty level easier than the previous one. Probably also aided by the fact you can now carry four weapons. The game crashed on me way more times then I've ...
Yucky
The game might've been good for it's time on its respective hardware, but after installing fixes to make it run on modern systems, its still plagued with issues. Crashing during gameplay, textures and levels not loading properly, frame drops to the 10s and below when reloading from a checkpoint in those levels, and even crashes during loading screens. Other than that the gameplay is solid (apart from the removal of the contextual lean feature from F.E.A.R. 1 and the Weapon DOF effect that you can't toggle off at all), the story is serviceable at best, and the horror elements get a bit old too quickly, exacerbated by the countless jump scares you encounter during gameplay and the constant QTE button mashing whenever you're prompted to do every time someone (or something) grabs you. The soundtrack is honestly kinda forgettable and the sound configuration is a bit of a headache to adjust unless you have a 5.1 surround sound compatible device. Overall a decent action horror shooter if an...
