I can recommend this if you enjoy some atmosphere and an interesting challenge. If you get over the initial learning curve the game has a lot of that 'one more game' feeling. The dark and restricted vision can make it tough to navigate. Once you get used to it then the challenge becomes not running out of ammo. Once you get used to that the challenge becomes figuring out how to fight the monsters in interesting ways using the game systems (maybe kiting them through acid or stunning them with an exploding fire extinguisher). Once you get used to that the challenge becomes abusing the games systems to conserve resources. There's perma-death and not much meta-progression (besides new character unlocks) so the game really puts it onto the player to learn and improve - not sure if players nowadays are into that but I personally enjoy it. And the runs are short so death doesn't set you back very far. (I haven't gotten into the game modifier settings yet but there are also options to m...

About This Game
Note from Roarke (the developer):
Heartless Dark was designed as a 'coffee-break roguelike' - easy to pick up and put down and not hugely demanding of your time. A run could be completed in around 20 minutes if you're good enough. While it may not contain thousands of item combinations, hundreds of enemies and complex meta-progression like other games in the genre, I've still put my passion into creating a unique, atmospheric and replay-able experience.
Action-Roguelike: Shoot, dodge, stun, electrocute, throw bombs and other tools as you kill monsters in abandoned corporate offices. Expect procedural levels, stats, upgrades, synergies, multiple characters and perma-death.
Oppressive Darkness: Your flashlight is your only view into the darkness all around you. Oh and your 6th sense...
Survival Horror: Your survival relies on spatial awareness, managing your limited resources and learning to use hazards to your advantage.

Heartless Dark is a horror/action roguelike that stands out from the rest of the roguelike genre. It's slow, tactical gameplay accentuates its eerie atmosphere and claustrophobic environments, making for a tense experience unlike what you'd expect of a game in this category. While the game is quite challenging, it features a depth in mechanics and subtle lore which makes for a world of intrigue that keeps you coming back for more. This is one of those games that you can see has been made with a sheer passion for the art and a determination to create something to be proud of - key components in good indie titles such as this. Well worth the try, especially if you're into the genre!
This game is very immersive when played with headphones on. It took me a while to get the hang of it but once I eventually did I found the game to be very addicting.
It is a solid and interesting concept, but it is flawed. With procedual levels, some are fine, others are wonky and will have objects stuck in the geometry and just be a plain annoyance at times. Enemies will get stuck on the geometry and is quite dumb in general. Poltergeists are fucking silly simply walking into the thrown item deals damage and can kill you, even if it's just lying still. The damage effect is a bit too extreme and will get you killed more time than you can imagine Not to mention that it chrases a lot.
Excelling atmospheric game play that is challenging yet rewarding once you get the hang of it. Great game design and physics bundled with superb sound effects, created an extremely entertaining game.
A very atmospheric and lethal rogue like. You have to budget your limited ammo and life against enemies that hit hard and fast but I've never lost a like a run thinking there was nothing I could do about it. Finding bullets and upgrades is always rewarding.
A wonderfully gloomy roguelike, definitely recommended to play with headphones. Following the development for a while has shown me that the dev is very eager to take feedback and improve the experience. I still haven't beaten it yet as it is a challenging experience, but there are plenty options to tweak the difficulty of runs, I think its always important to applaud when devs take the time to include accessibility options like that. Definitely recommend and I'm looking forward to the future of this project :)
Really having a great time with this, lots of little systems interacting together means there are a lot of areas for learning and optimisation. Every now and then you get to be a mad scientist with the elements interacting (water + electricity, or explosions dropping acid, which heal you if you stand just outside the blast zone). I enjoyed the game during the next fest demo period, and am enjoying it even more now. I feel like this is one of those games that rewards a player for learning its systems over time, while also not being too demanding of your time (no 80 hour jrpg campaign here). Tip for the uninitiated: Play slow, your health is a lot harder to recover than your ammo. The key is knowing how to approach your enemy.
I enjoyed the many hidden gems within this game. I liked the ability to choose which upgrade I wanted. I also enjoyed the fact the resources are limited and you have to be strategic in how you play. You cant just find the elevator and run past the monsters. You have to fight, collect and find your way through the maze like map. Overall a great game and I look forward to spending more time leveling up and fighting the boss.
This game is awesome! Would definitely recommend playing with headphones, really ups the experience!
