About This Game

The Plucky Squire follows the magical adventures of Jot and his friends - storybook characters who discover a three-dimensional world outside the pages of their book.

When the malevolent Humgrump realizes he's the villain of the book - destined to lose his battle against the forces of good for all eternity - he kicks the heroic Jot out of its pages and changes the story forever.

Jot must face challenges, unlike anything he's ever seen if he is to save his friends from Humgrump's dark forces and restore the book's happy ending.

Jump between 2D and 3D worlds in this charming action-adventure - solving puzzles, boxing badgers, flying with a jetpack, and enjoying many more delightful and surprising mini-challenges as you become the hero of a living storybook.

Not every game should be big, epic, and serious. This one is short, lighthearted, and amusing. The puzzles are not too complex, the platforming sections are not demanding, and the stealthy bits are very unlikely to make you rage-quit. It works great as a family-friendly game, but us, adults, can enjoy it too. The enjoyment could be more complete, if those broken rhythm-game-boss-fights actually followed the...well, rhythm, but we've only got the two of them, so I can't complain.

It's a very cool visually made game, but that's it. It felt pretty empty...

Plucky Squire is one of those high quality games that just does everything right. Well, not EVERYTHING...but everything that it intends to. It's the kind of game that knows exactly what it wants to be. After reading many of the negative reviews for Plucky Squire, I can't help but feel that many of these people expect the game to be something that it's not. It's not some deep and insightful story. It's not a 30+ hour life-changing saga. And it's not a complex game full of varied or rewarding combat or RPG mechanics. To put it simply, it's a kids game. It's a charming, easy to follow story with simple game mechanics, a unique artistic design, and writing clearly intended for children. I could easily see my son playing this game when he's old enough. So please don't buy this game expecting something other than what it's clearly trying to be.

A fun The Legend of Zelda -type adventure. A bit rough around the edges, for example the textures in 3D-sections were blurry, despite graphics settings being set to high. You are Jot, a hero in a storybook, who has banished the evil wizard Humgrump in the past. But now he's back with a vengeance and he pushes you out of the book to get you out of his way. But doing so, he has inadvertently taught you how to get in and out of the storybook and you use that ability to your advantage. I was not a fan of the constant minigames that interrupted the normal gameplay. There were sections with boxing, a shoot 'em up, stealth, among others, but there is also an option to skip those.

I've only just begun The Plucky Squire and already I'm enthralled. The game runs flawlessly on my Steam Deck with all graphical settings set to their maximum values. The book you play inside of looks like a real-life children's book! I especially appreciate our protagonist's backstory: he's a writer, and employs some seriously out-of-this-world adventure capabilities not dissimilar to Adventure Time's Finn the Human. It's super easy to jump in when the mood strikes, and just as easy to leap out when you've decided to give it a rest. I'm a major bookworm and write a lot in my spare time; which helps me relate to our hero...which serves to envelope me further into its world. Ultimately, I'd strongly recommend giving it a go! I expect most won't be disappointed by the value for their hard-earned money spent on it. This is one of those relatively rare cases in which I wouldn't mind paying the full price, even though I got it on sale for 50% off its asking sum. Go for it!

(Played in challenge mode) Fun art style and humor, but bland characters. Combat ain't very good (player lunges forward like 30 ft when attacking, accidently touching enemies often). Smart but cumbersome gimmicks. A few terrible bugs (dying in some areas causes a black screen) (got stuck in dying animation after beating the final boss, and couldn't finish the game). Decent variety of minigames, but the Puzzle Bobble ripoff one is awful (player needs the ability to rotate).

The Plucky Squire is a delightful and imaginative action-adventure platformer that thrives on its inventive premise and playful spirit. Developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, the game tells the story of Jot, a storybook hero who finds himself cast out of his own tale by the villainous Humgrump, a once-defeated antagonist who discovers that escaping the confines of the book might give him the power to rewrite his fate. What follows is a heartwarming and whimsical journey that blends traditional 2D platforming with surprising shifts into a vibrant 3D world, all while maintaining a sense of charm, creativity, and narrative wit that makes the experience feel fresh from start to finish. What immediately stands out about The Plucky Squire is its visual identity. The game begins within the confines of a richly illustrated storybook, using hand-drawn 2D art that feels pulled straight from the pages of a children’s bedtime tale. The environments are colorful and...

I haven't played much, but from what I have seen so far this game really doesn't have anything interesting to offer, aside from the cute art. Not recommended.

2D and 3D were both mid. Mostly a Sideways Thumb for the proof of concept, but good grief...the READING. I would have gladly paid $5 extra to have the dialogue AI-voiced rather than fast-forwarding through all the superfluous text. Also, the story and delivery were both very Bri'tish.
