About the Game

The Alters is an ambitious sci-fi survival game with a unique twist. You play as Jan Dolski, the lone survivor of a crash-landed expedition on a hostile planet. To survive, you must form a new crew for your mobile base.

Using a substance called Rapidium, you create alternative versions of Jan - THE ALTERS - each one shaped by a different crucial decision from the protagonist’s past.

As you navigate through survival and moral dilemmas, you will explore a branching narrative filled with captivating character dynamics and challenging decisions.

At the same time, you’re challenged to reflect on one of life’s fundamental questions – do we shape our destiny or does it shape us? This makes your bid for survival a deeply personal experience.

Use the quantum computer onboard your base to simulate alternate outcomes of your past choices and uncover Jan’s different life paths. Each Alter brought to life thanks to the remarkable properties of Rapidium comes with unique skills and emotional depths. These variations offer both opportunities and challenges as you navigate personal struggles and manage the fragile dynamics of your crew.

To operate the mobile base, you’ll need to explore the planet’s surface in search of precious resources, like metals and organics. Yet venturing outside the safe haven comes with the risk of exposing you and your Alters to various deadly anomalies as well as the ever-present radiation of the sun. That’s why you must pay attention to the in-game day and night cycle and plan your daily activities wisely!

Navigate a narrative rich with moral dilemmas and branching paths. Your choices will shape Jan’s relations with his Alters which then will impact their journey and lead you to multiple outcomes and endings.

Gathered resources can be used in different ways – create necessary items or develop your base with additional modules like Research Lab or Social Room. Sometimes you will have to choose between creating items specially for your Alters and ones that could push the mission forward, like Anomaly Detectors or Radiation Filters. The burden of every decision lies solely on your shoulders as you will never be able to satisfy everyone’s needs.

The planet features unique biomes and secrets waiting to be found, but deadly anomalies stand in your way. Levitating rocks and eerie distortions of reality attract attention immediately, while other singularities remain invisible to the naked eye and require special tools to uncover. In all cases, you must be extra careful - or face the risk of instant death, radiation-induced injuries, and even disintegration of time and space. Also, you may want to avoid exploring the planet during hours when intense radioactivity can eat right through your suit. Happy travels!

Jan Dolski is about to face the answers to the essential “what if?” question in the form of alternative versions of himself. This makes the predicament he is in even more daunting as you slowly discover the impact every choice has on Jan’s survival.

The Alters poses you with life’s most nagging questions
If I had to review this game constructively and stick to the actual experience — ignoring the “whiners” who complain about everything — here’s how it goes:
1. Synopsis the premise is simple yet powerful: the protagonist crash-lands on a hostile planet, the crew is gone, and the only way to survive is to create alternate versions of yourself. Instead of focusing on epic battles, the game shines a spotlight on the consequences of your choices: every new Alter is a step into another life, shaped by different motivations and traumas. The narrative is fueled by moral dilemmas and small but impactful scenes that make you reflect on personal responsibility and the price of survival. 2. Characters each Alter has their own personality, fate, and perspective on what’s happening. These aren’t soulless clones — they’re fully fleshed-out individuals with their own pain, ambitions, and memories. Conflicts between different versions of the same person add genuine drama,...

I originally gave this game a good review because the concept was fresh and the core mechanics — resource gathering, crafting, and base-building — were well-implemented. It had potential. But the more I played, the more it drove me insane. The premise is solid: you’re stranded on a planet alone, forced to create “alter” clones of yourself to survive. Sounds cool, right? Well, these alters are the most insufferable co-workers in the galaxy. Every two in-game days, they’re planning a rebellion against me — even when I’m working my butt off to keep everyone alive. They just won’t shut up: “We want better food, we want a gym, we want a social room…” Like, bro, please for the love of god stop wining, we’re stranded on a hostile planet, not running a luxury cruise ship. i died over 5 times due to rebillions and i lost some time consuming progress. And the scientist character? Makes zero sense. He suggests forcing everyone to work extra shifts, but when I do exac...

The Alters is basically “what if I made different life choices?” — and then all those alternate me's move in with me. Fun, right? Well, at first — yes! Cool concept, solid gameplay, first playthrough is engaging. But the story feels undercooked. Most Alters are kind of meh emotionally, and the endings? I saw three — felt like the same one wearing different hats. Break room films, though? Absolute chaotic masterpieces. I'd play the game again just for those. Rating: 6.5/10. Worth playing once. Replay only if you're hunting achievements or curious how weird your other selves can get.

Yes. This game is wonderful. Pros: - original idea - story rich (if you like it) - branching stories - still a building\management game - beautiful - quick dev response Cons: - some very minor bugs, regularly patched - some mechanics are not that intuitive - no option to skip tutorials when playing for n-th time Observation: If the maps were random-generated, it would be a direct candidate to Game of the Year.

The sad French game will probably win, but real heads know that the Alters is Game of the Year.

The Alters managed to pull something that most games fail at: Making decisions matter. In this game, every decision has an impact and it's never clear the extent of the consecuences they may have. Choices are not divided in good or bad, there's no paragon or renegade, nor black or white. It's just the perfect example of decisions done right. The story is really well written, with plot twists and decisions that have an impact in how everything unfolds. I couldn't believe the things that The Alters managed to pull off. Gameplay wise, it's really engaging, managing the base, collecting resources, discovering the world, interacting with your alters and taking care of their needs. It's all well done, with some grinding that can get a little tedious, but the game is worth it nonetheless. Graphics are also amazing, and performance is top notch. Imagine a AAA company getting a performance like this on release, keep dreaming. Congrats to 11bit studio. Sound is also well done, the mu...

I have now completed this game. I really wanted to like The Alters but ultimately I can't recommend it. I think the vision of this game is great, where different choices lead to different outcomes, but the execution ultimately fell flat. At review time, it's riddled with game-breaking bugs that require reloading saves and often players costing hours of progress. There's also minor bugs such as certain base modules not working, getting stuck on terrain, or alters getting stuck. Other players online report the same thing. Besides progress wrecking bugs. A couple of other design choices were bad in my opinion. 1. The anomaly minigame is very bad, you are literally just chasing a circle around with your crosshair like you are playing some sort of aim trainer. And the game requires you to do this, A LOT. Honestly, who thought this would be a good idea? 2. The gameplay feels super repetitive and honestly a slog to get through. Ultimately you do the same thing in act 2 and 3 as...

Good game with fun exploration and story bogged down by malicious hidden timegates (in-game time) during progression while putting you on a death timer that forces you to rush every objective story constantly or risk have an objectively bricked save you need to savescum/roll back.
DISCLAIMER: This is a full review, and NOT a first impressions review
The Alters is a game developed and published by 11 bit studios The game offers some nice graphics and a beautiful aesthetic which is pleasant all the same and has some amazing attention to detail The storytelling is absolutely great and is one of the best survival management games I've played in a while and really does a good job in showcasing an individual surviving on a hostile planet and the things and sacrifices one needs to do to survive so The Alters overall, however, is a atmospheric yet oddly interesting game to play and is a great story-rich survival management game to play as long as you like with as many different replays as possible or until you reach the finish line!
RECOMMENDED :)
[i] THEPCGAMER'S BEST GAME IN STEAM LIBRARY! (What's this? :- Like some games get "Best Game of 2014" or "Best Indie Game", etc... So I have decided to make my own!)
