I do enjoy this game, I really do! But I cannot recommend it right now due to the asinine amount of issues that the most recent update has dropped with it. Random freezing and/or lagging, credits playing on the planet menu even when you haven't beaten the game on that save file (it happens on both completely new saves or old saves), not to mention other issues that are probably happening to others that haven't happened to me. Also, the new photo system of having to get certain photos to get stars to complete a level? Yeah, nah, not fun in my opinion. It only makes it much more stressful when you can't get that one last star because you cannot figure it out (like, multiple phenomenon or something??? What does that mean???). At least being able to toggle whether we want to continue using the old system or the new one would have been nice. So again, I cannot recommend this game right now as of the recent Heatwave update. If they fix the problems, then maybe I'll change my tune.

About This Game
Terra Nil: Heatwave
Heatwave brings a blistering new challenge of the arid climate to Terra Nil, introducing a whole new region to restore. Featuring three unique maps, 13 new animals, 10 new buildings, and five new biomes to transform the desolate into the flourishing. An improved animal system and a new photography mode give you more ways to interact with and appreciate the ecosystems you create.
The new arid maps offer striking environments and creative restoration puzzles, from vast grassland savannahs, to sublime deserts, and verdant acacia forests. Coax greenery from salt pans and riverbeds choked with alien vegetation on the edge of the Parched Dunes. Bridge a vast canyon, douse oil fires, and restore a cactus-filled desert using the remote-controlled ERW1N recycling bot on the Canyon Peaks. Clean up a former oil field, creating muddy watering holes for all manner of fauna, and bring diversity back to theFracked Floodplain.
To complement these dramatic landscapes, the wildlife system is more approachable and rewarding, with 13 new animals, including elephants, lions, crocodiles, and giraffes, that appear more naturally and stay longer. The new photography system lets you capture your favorite moments, earning stars for creative snapshots of happy animals and lush habitats, which you can keep in your trusty handbook
Deepen the sense of wonder and accomplishment at the heart of Terra Nil, as you bring life back to even the harshest places in Heatwave, the most significant and hottest content update to date.
Terra Nil: Vita Nova

Vita Nova expands on Terra Nil’s deeply satisfying nature restoration with new missions, buildings, an updated wildlife system, and a brand new world map—which is now fully 3D and can be freely rotated—giving you a more accurate and personalized overview of your efforts to bring life back to this dead world.
New levels include Polluted Bay, a barren landscape carved in half by a badly polluted river, and Scorched Caldera, a vast volcanic crater that you must transform into a life-filled freshwater lake. These, and all the new maps in the Vita Nova update, will put your reclamation skills to the test in interesting and unusual ways.
A completely overhauled wildlife system makes Terra Nil’s transformed landscapes more alive than ever. Animals emerge more naturally and have a deeper set of needs you need to fulfill if you want to keep them happy and abundant. This adds a new dimension of strategy to the game and gives you more animals to admire—including a brand new species, the jaguar—as nature is steadily restored.
About the Game
Terra Nil is a game about transforming a barren, lifeless landscape into a thriving, vibrant ecosystem. Turn dead soil into fertile grassland, clean polluted oceans, plant sprawling forests, and create the ideal habitat for animals to call home. Then recycle your buildings and leave no trace that you were there. Reclaim the wasteland.
A reverse city builder
Use advanced eco-technology to purify the soil, creating plains, wetlands, beaches, rainforests, wildflowers, and more—then efficiently recycle everything you've built, leaving the environment pristine for its new animal inhabitants.Different maps every time
Procedurally generated landscapes mean no two playthroughs of Terra Nil will ever be the same. Plan your build around randomized, challenging, and unpredictable terrain, including snaking rivers, mountains, lowlands, and oceans.A natural ebb and flow
Each region of Terra Nil progresses through phases, with the ultimate goal being leaving pristine wilderness behind. Levels are not about infinite growth, but rather balancing and nurturing the environment before leaving it in peace.Experience tranquility
Lush hand-painted environments, relaxing music, and an atmospheric ambient soundscape make Terra Nil a peaceful, meditative experience. When you're done, use Appreciate mode to bask in the natural beauty of the ecosystem you have restored.Screenshots
User Reviews
This is my favourite game. Unfortunately (?), it has ruined me for other games by making me think critically about games premised on environmental destruction and resource extraction.
Never been one for CitySim and automation games, as they always just feel so destructive and advantage-taking... This game gives the opposite feeling! Not the biggest fan of the mechanics, but that boils down to a personal preference; me not being used to these kind of games. The devteam seems genuinely interested in world preservation, doing "save a penguin" and talking about real life climate changes, which is the biggest plus imo
Cool game but they need to make the photo mode optional for beating a mission. Very silly.
This game is cute but also very weird. You create beautiful landscapes and have to make sure wild animals are happy. You are using all sorts of science fiction tech to achieve your goals. I have two problems with this game:
not enough freedom
On each map you have a specific subset of all available buildings to use. This means you have to solve all problems in a specific way. You also have to do the tasks in a specific order. I would prefer I could play every map however I want even if my way would be harder.
too many Bugs
In only 5 hours I already encountered several game breaking bugs. For example when loading a saved map all the buildings were missing. One map cannot be completed because you have to take a photo showing "multiple climate goals". The game does not say what this means and while on most maps it is easy to take such a photo by accident, on "Glacier Volcano" it does not work. There are several discussions on steam about this problem with n...
I wanted to like this as I loved the game's prototype, but sadly, I ended up refunding it. The biggest issues were the lack of controller support, the requirement to spend a bunch of time in photo mode to complete a level (and it's clunky to boot, as you can't even zoom out!), and the inability to rotate the camera to view obscured objects. The guidebook was also difficult to read on the Steam Deck, which seemed strange given the presence of a UI scaling option. Why not scale it up too and let us use the mouse or joystick to pan around when the book is too big to fit on the screen? Apparently the photo mode is a recent addition, and I really do have to question the decision to require using it as someone who played the prototype a few years back and loved it. The gameplay loop was fun and fulfilling in the prototype, which makes it a shame that they shoved photo mode into it. I want to admire the beautiful scenery on my own time; being forced to extensively use it is detrimental to w...
I really would LOVE to recommend this game, but I can't. It is beautiful, with a relaxing atmosphere, the game mechanics make sense. HOWEVER: the amount of bugs blocking the game progress and even the most basic use of the interface are insane. I had to restart whole campaigns because my GUI just decided to disappear. I have played a level perfectly only to be stuck at the end after recycling 100% with no solution but to restart the level. Unfortunately, updates have done nothing to fix these issues. Today I reinstalled the game one full year after my first attempts, just trying to give it another chance and guess what? Stuck again. It defeats the purpose of being a relaxed game and you end up more stressed than before playing.
Just can't recommend this game in its present state. The Vita Nova update made animals a bit more annoying, but was overall a great update bar that one flaw. The new photograph mechanic in Heatwave, though? Entirely too annoying to deal with, the other added content is overshadowed by dealing with this one new requirement. The field of view of the camera is really small, and it doesn't seem to give you any indicator of whether your current view would hit any of your targets unless I missed something. If they made this mechanic optional, or did a LOT of improvements on it, I'd gladly recommend this game.
Relaxing, tranquil, peaceful, beautiful... This puzzle game is a masterpiece and a great work of art. The art and sound design is amazingly good and perfectly coordinated. The soundtrack is currently one of my most listened to collections and the fact that there just was a free content upgrade is the final flourish. I absolutely recommend this game, even for the full price.
Was looking so forward to this game and was quite dissapointed. Requiring me to take 10 star photos that dont properly work to progress a level is the dumbest thing ive ever had to do in the building game. what maeks this worst is taht i am taking photos of the animals but it doesnt register. So not only is it tedious and a stupid idea, but its broken as well. I closed and probably wont open the game again
