About This Game

Rush the university's secret societies as a first-year Magical Studies major! Will you keep your magic a secret from the mundanes or expose the truth?

Witchcraft U is a 200,000-word interactive fantasy novel by Jei D. Marcade. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

You're a fresh-faced new student at Larkspur University, a college for witches that began accepting mundanes a few decades ago. (Strangely, the mundanes never seem to notice the witches.) It's your first time living away from home, and that means new spells, new friends, and new opportunities for romance!

Three secret societies control the university, and they've all taken a special interest in you. But you have secrets of your own: namely, your family's underworld criminal empire--and just when you think you're out, they pull you back in.

As a first-generation university student, the pressure's on to make friends, find a date, maintain your grades, hold down a part-time job, and prove to your family that you belong here, while keeping your magical abilities a secret from your mundane peers.

Will you rush one of the secret societies or rebuke them? Dress to impress or attend lecture in PJs? Will you choose the path most likely to lead you to fulfillment, knowledge, influence, or wealth? What kind of witch will you be?

  • Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, bi, or asexual
  • Hone your spellcraft in one of four magical tracks
  • Collaborate with your classmates, compete against them, or hook up with them
  • Support the mundane students or sabotage their plans
  • Inherit a criminal empire or abdicate the throne
  • Keep your grades up or lose your scholarship
  • Avoid the abyssal gaze of the Campus Squirrel

See you next semester at Witchcraft U!

Rather too crowded, plot-wise, and a bit buggy. My game hard-locked when I was in the middle of some secret society nonsense I barely cared about. (And, arguably, the secret society framing junk was the weakest part of the work.) Among the other plots, one has the mob, a teahouse owner who's trying to take over the market, a possessed student, and a dozen other threads by the time the secret society stuff gets into full swing. Each of these was more interesting than what was effectively some fraternity that was far too full of itself, and several could've likely been books in their own right. I found myself rather wishing I could tell the main plot to piss off, because it was boring compared to everything else. It also seemed near impossible to stop the secret society unless one had the foresight or luck to pick certain magical paths to train at the beginning of the novel. TL;DR, not a horrible game, not terrible writing, but too many plot threads at once.

I loved the idea, the environment, the characters and so on and that's why I will recomend it because it shows great promise and I had lots of fun. However... it does seem very incomplete and in need of a big continuation. Also, it's buggy. I tried many times to get a good grade in the second semester and succeed in another plot moment and both seemed impossible. Specially the first because the GPA is bugged by the second semester, which made impossible to keep it above 3.5 (important for the game). For now, I'll only be happy that I managed to save the life of my in-game boyfriend.

Solid game, good writing, I enjoyed it. Absolutely hated how depressing/disturbing some of the bad ends were as well as the forced memory tampering. Really enjoyed it up until that point tbh. Probably just a me thing but that shit left me in a bad mood for days after. Just find that kind of shit disturbing myself. Overall it was very solid and I'm sure other people will have a better time.

ETA: I purchased this on steam, but played it entirely on my phone. I didn't know if I needed 2+ hours playtime to transfer this to my Choice of Games account so that's why I just left it running without playing it on my desktop. This story started off strong, but it quickly went down hill. The jump cuts from one scene to another were absolutely jarring, and many times it would happen after I had made a choice. So... what happened after I made that choice? Why is it suddenly a day or a month later? I found the writing style to be abrupt, often confusing because of how often it jumps around, and the overall structure of the story to be that of a deflated balloon. About half way through I really started disliking this story as it seemed like no matter what choice I made it was the bad / wrong one, and it did not matter if I had high marks in that skill. This was hammered home as the choices I made seem like they had absolutely zero impact on the story, and instead I as the reader was m...

I only bought this game because I was bored and to write my thoughts on Harry Potter, The only thing that stands out as being more overrated to me than Harry Potter is The Bible. Harry Potter is written and promoted by the Ministry of Truth, It is the McDonald's of litterature. Witchcraft and Wizardry are not the types of things that should be glorified in such books or at least those said books shouldn't be nearly as popular. If you want a vision of the future, Winston, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever. And She's buying a Stairway to Heaven.
