Hear me out; The potential this game has is immense. I know this sounds like it came from nothing more than a broken record, but I truly and wholeheartedly believe this observation is not misplaced. The game was rough on initial release - it's still in alpha, we're only 8 months out - but if you compare the game then to its current state, see what they've changed and the direction they're taking, it's clear the game is shaping up to be something special and thoroughly enjoyable yet. Most people's issues stem from the fact that they have to spend 30 dollars on an alpha; people want to know their purchase is worth it, they don't want to gamble their money. But, I don't see how something like paid early access is any different from a kick-starter: You have the product in front of you, you can interact with the developers directly and spearhead the direction the game takes, why are you not participating to make it the best it could be? Something YOU want to play? "It's not Hyper Light D...

I bought this game as a means of supporting the developers due to their success with hyper light drifter but I severely regret this decision and wish I could get a refund. The developers are not on the same page as the players and their recommendations; There's little to no focus on optimisation or variety in terms of enemies and things to do, which eventually leads the game to feel monotonous. Like others have mentioned, they seem to have been corporate-ized, in the sense that this seems to be made to follow the recent trend of "roguelikes"; not to make a soul-filled game for their loyal customers, but another cow to milk for their dear shareholders. I may change this review if the game changes overall but I highly doubt it. The discord is heavily moderated and censored and has a lot of confirmatory-bias.
As an avid hyper light drifter fan i have tried to enjoy this game multiple times. I just cant. The only thing that actually ties this game to drifter is the title of the game and the art style. There is no mystifying and jaw dropping scenery like in the original. there is no truly fluid and tight combat system. There are no actually thought out level designs. Characters currently are limited to select weapons to artificially promote character diversity. extraction as a concept is pointless aside from being a source of infinite health. the merchants are chock full of empty item slots and similarly vacant functionality aside from re-rolling the weapon you have. Some people will say that this game shouldnt be like hyper light drifter or that it was never trying to be. That's a poor excuse. Do you know why people are happy to play mario kart? because there are many other ACTUAL mario games. Halo wars? Backed by an entire series. But hyper light drifter got one actual game, and after ...
The Good First things first, the visual design of this game is pretty amazing and follows suit from Hyper Light Drifter which was also a very beautiful game. Character designs are awesome, and the world is very pretty. Enemy designs are so and so, a few of them are pretty cool, others feel a bit whatever. The music that goes along with it is also very nice, and I've actually listened to the OST stand-alone already, which is a good sign. I am afraid this is where the outright Good part is over. The Bad (I Wish They Were Good) Movement - I'll just start by saying that the hoverboard does not feel very good to use. I've drowned a few times because of it, and the moment you hit a terrain it can't scale on its own it just breaks down. Jumping on the hoverboard is also very janky, and the transition between combat and hoverboarding is basically non-existent as you can't really attack while on it, not even use the guns, which would have been cool. Dashing is snappy, and feels very forgiv...
Why am I getting 70-80 FPS on a 5080 with stuttering???? This game doesn't look NEARLY good enough to justify this performance. I really really hope they turn the game around, I wanted to buy it to show my support because I think the concept is really cool, I like the art design and characters a lot and the gameplay seemed *decent* but holy crap the game shouldn't be running like this considering what it is.
hard to recommend. Its kinda like risk of rain with extraction elements. The melee combat is pretty good and fair for the most part, the parrying is decent too. Ranged combat can be mildly annoying because ammo management is a big thing and it sucks when you suddenly realize you don't have any ammo left in the frenzy of battle. And battle really is best described as "frenzy" in this game. I love the franchise and I like this game but the amount of VFX on the screen when fighting big crowds of enemies tends to be very confusing and overwhelming, especially since there are some special enemy types and AOE attacks that can be obscured by the sheer amount of neon VFX vomit exploding all over your screen. Risk of Rain suffered from this too but the combat in that game is much simpler and relies less on reading enemy attack animations. Overall I think this is a good game and its much nicer to play now than it was during the launch week but there's still some problem areas that need...
Could've been fun. It's not, it's really not.
ngl, this game is very boring if youre looking to feel overpowered like risk of rain 2 and just demolish enemies and have the thrill of swarms and having to jump all over.. this game is NOT it. its slow at the start, slow at mid, and slow in the end. I don't feel strong, i dont feel snappy, you don't get weird builds and fun synergies, its the same weapons following the same 3 hit combos... maybe toss in a dash... but following the same path.. its just boring
Game has many improvements since launch
Feels so close to something good, but misses the mark in a lot of really frustrating ways. There's a ton of little things that feel *just* a little bit off in a way that makes me wish it was better.
