About This Game

Hope's Journey features a unique blend of innovative gameplay and evidence-based techniques to help players learn CBT and recognize common cognitive biases, for a better mental wellbeing.

Gameplay elements include the unique mechanic of "thought catching". Just like in real life, some events and interactions trigger negative thoughts in Hope's mind, which the player needs to catch by pressing the appropriate directional button.

Key Features:

  • A true video game to improve your mental wellbeing.
  • Learn the basics of CBT and common cognitive biases.
  • Unique and innovative gameplay, mixing adventure, puzzles and RPG elements.
  • "Catch" and analyze Hope's thoughts as she faces everyday issues not unsimilar to the ones you face.
  • Neuroscience-based puzzles augment and complement the therapeutic content.
  • Story-driven experience not without a sense of humor.
  • Colorful and interesting characters.

Story:

The school's counselor approaches Hope after noticing she's not feeling particularly good. After explaining the basics of CBT, the counselor gives her a device that is meant to help her notice her thoughts. However, Hope soon discovers that there's more to this device than she could've ever imagined, and that the counselor's intentions weren't as innocent as she had led her to believe.

I started playing this game hoping for something that I could use with clients. I was deeply disappointed and frustrated as it misuses therapeutic techniques in ways that can actually be harmful by teaching people that they and their thoughts are a problem. The way they use already problematic versions of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is bad. The game itself is utilizing rigid, AKA Black and White thinking. There are no "good" nor "bad" feelings and classifying thoughts as bad is also harmful to people's therapy and healing as it deepens distrust in themself. The cute music and cool game play and small glimmers of what this could have been are not close to enough to save this game for me. As a licensed mental health professional I would NOT recommend this as a game for people seeking a game to educate them about their thought processes. **5/4/2022 Update** I've played more of the game and continue to have the same issues with the content and writing of the game despite some attempt a...

This is such a good game! I definitely recommend getting it because while it may not be the same as therapy it does go over stuff that helps. The game puts these complex emotions in a very creative way and it is very informative. I hope it helps you as much as it does to me. 11/10 would recommend.

A very interesting game, it may not be the most fun or action packed, but I think it's entertaining enough. However, the highlight here is the therapeutic elements, and for me they've been mind blowing. I mean the ideas presented are so simple, yet they explain so much about how our feelings come to be... highly recommended!

Hope's Journey is a game with modest graphics (but hey, I'm an old school Final Fantasy fan) but a very lively story, I found myself caring about the characters and how they see the world. Obviously the main focus of the game is therapy (it's in the name, duh!) and I believe it delivers on that front. While the game constantly reminded me that nothing is a substitute for seeking professional help, it is a great resource as a first step to think about the ideas discussed in therapy (speaking from personal experience of having sought professional help in the past) The one thing I constantly wished for while playing this game was voice acting, but that's easy to forgive given that it's a small indie title.

I learned in the first hour of this game more than I had during months of therapy. The ideas presented make a lot of sense to me. What I really like is that the game uses simple language and doesn't try to sound too smart or treat the player in a condescending way... Which is how I felt during some therapy sessions...
