About This Game

In the poem The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is faced with a creature that enters his room and remains on the bust of Athena, goddess of wisdom, thus placing himself above reason and logic. The crow speaks only one word, "Nevermore", which the narrator interprets in different ways to answer his own questions.

In THE CHAMBER DOOR something similar happens, but before Athena a door opens, a portal to another world of creatures and demons of nightmares. While the dark-feathered raven contrasts with the marble of Athena, of light and darkness, life and death, our hero is taken by something above reason, making him enter that door with the certainty of the unknown.

THE CHAMBER DOOR is a game of introduction to the NEVERMORE universe. You will be introduced to fluid combat mechanics and endless possibilities. Aggressiveness and agility is the basis of combat, you will be rewarded in a combos ranking system where your variety of blows is your greatest weapon, but beware, NEVERMORE contains dangerous creatures and any mistake can be your last.

As you progress through the game, you'll craft exclusive mirror cards to build your character according to your combat style. Each card can bring new abilities, new mechanics or even improve your stats.

When passing through the CHAMBER DOOR you will face hordes of varied enemies in an arena system, at the end of each level you find a passage to proceed to the next one. As you defeat these hordes, you will eventually come across more powerful entities and stronger bosses.

If you fail and get defeated, you will return to the first level, however, in a roguelike system, you keep the souls you captured in your last adventure to evolve your charms through the statue of Athena, thus becoming stronger and more prepared to advance further more on your next try.

I don't normally write reviews. That said, the developer claims to want as much feedback as possible- so here I am. If the "recommendation" system were more flexible, I'd be sitting smack dab in the middle. I think this game has a good core concept, and I'm ignoring the lack of content because it's in early access. That said, I can't recommend this game as an avid roguelike fan, simply because it seems to flat-out ignore much of what attracts people to the roguelike genre. I need to make it clear how much I enjoy the roguelike genre (roguelites included). I've played every "big name" roguelike there is (possible exception in Inscryption), and I am always, ALWAYS looking for more. The good parts of this game are easier to explain than the bad. The good: -Combat is fun (fast but NOT fluid) -Environmental interactios seems interesting (needs expansion but this is an Early Access) -Pixel art is pretty nice -Runs on a toaster -Costs barely anything (especially considering that i...

Nevermore is your usual hack and slash that does everything just right. Everything from the movement to the combat! More specifically, the usage of the hook allows you to throw projectiles back, pull enemies, and fly towards them. Combining the hook with your attacks just feels so enjoyable, quick, and just overall easy. However, your enjoyment is very short-lived due to the lack of content it currently has, but it is an early access so you just have to be patient. The game also offers booster packs and a level up system for stats that will boost your damage, health, or magic damage. The booster packs once equipped will grant you unique attacks associated with the mob from the card but once you have unlocked all of them, the game will be significantly easier (I suggest playing the game without booster packs after if you want a challenge). A couple of things that would be interesting to see would be some implementation of a passive or ability that allows you to pick up loot without ha...

Full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/XNmXHdCPeTI This is a REALLY fun to play game. I do think the title left me wanting a bit more in the way of plot since it's Edgar Allan Poe inspired, but the only edgar allan poe thing is the crow aesthetic it seems like to me. Overall though it plays beautifully who doesn't want to unlock enemies abilities that give you new attacks and beat said enemies to death with their own abilities that feel great as you unlock them. Some Suggestions possibly adding a survival room with waves of MASS AMOUNTS of monsters after the final boss possibly with a leaderboard, achievements would be fantastic, a few more upgrades not monster based, but your regular upgrade one I would have really liked to see is a great magnetism for items that drop so I don't have to run around and grab them after slaughtering a room. Granted I know he's one creator, I'm not faulting the game for it not being in there just giving suggestions. The game is very short right now, but...
SNAPSHOT
A $1 game with an $8 price tag
OVERALL - 2 / 10

PROS
+ interesting concept
CONS
- barely any actual content
FULL REVIEW
The final credits point out this game was made due to $2000 from kickstarter, so that should really tell you everything you need to know about what to expect here. The game itself is less than 2 hours long so I'll try to spend a proportional amount of time for a review here:

entire game is basically a walking simulator + forced grind to boost stats for the final boss - no shortcuts / improvements for progress so if you die you walk through the WHOLE (short) game again
game seems built to avoid refunding - levels are intentionally big and mostly empty and you're forced to grind stats just for the final boss (although you can also just stand still and spam attack it and never take any damage)
some annoying bugs (e.g. losing all your stat upgrades if you quit the game) show that this...

Possibly the simplest easiest recommendation imaginable. You, a blade, a grappling hook, and an entire evil land's worth of things that need extermination. Perhaps a bit steep on the price side, but excellent production value for its development, and the flip-out spastic mania of the thing means it's got a special happy placement in the brain's fast twitch endorphin factory. Similar to Olija in terms of appeal, and other respects as well. The developer's got some interesting ideas about how to put an RPG together - will be watching for future projects.

I have a bit to spit at this game. I know its Early Access, but that is exactly my first problem. I don't think games should have "Early Access" stages. I think its ridiculous and a game should be released when its desired state is met, not before. Sure you want beta testers, but not people that are wanting to play the actual game to play it, when its not even finished. But anyway, I am just saying that I am critiquing a game that is not done, or not in its "playable state" in my opinion. First, I will start out with what I like about this game. The concept is what I love the most, and is what drew me into it. The idea of the game I think is marvelous. I am a big fan of the idea of a Roguelike based off of Edgar Allan Poe, especially the Nevermore poem which I find fascinating. Another thing I will add to what I like is the combat system. The mechanics of your fighting abilities feels great, and there are a wide array of moves. The game is easy to run, I wasn't really able to find an...
